Champions League revamp

Why is there a narrative that football needs fixing or 'more quality' matches to stop it from imploding?

Because the big clubs financed the last few years of competition with one another and a lot of the money that was flowing into the game dried up due to the pandemic.

The result is that unless the big clubs find some revenue, and fast, their stranglehold is likely to be broken.

I don't think it's a coincidence that we're in the hunt for Europe along with West Ham and Leicester, that Serie A and Ligue 1 are *gasp* competitive or that Sevilla is hanging around the Spanish giants post-pandemic. Bayern is still running away with the German league, but they were in the strongest position after the restart and aren't in debt up to their eyeballs.

The problem with all European reforms is that they always suggest more matches. The reality is that we actually need less elite football because there is too much and familiarity breeds content and apathy. League football is your weekly fix but then I prefer a less is more approach with European and international football.

There is a reason why I could watch 3 or 4 matches a day during a world Cup. It has a novelty element and only happens every 4 years. If it happened every summer it would be rubbish and I would lose interest very quickly. Christmas is great but if it happened towards the end of every month then it would be rubbish.

If they were banned from Europe for five years, their whole house of cards would collapse. The players would flock to the exits, new players wouldn't come in, their sponsorship contracts would be renewed for far less or not at all, they would become mediocrities and the overseas fans would shift their allegiances or find something else to watch and buy merch from.

That would push them all back into the arms of Perez, I suspect.
Good.

Do you go the game mate?
Yes. Season ticket holder. (I can see where this is going). I loathe the Premier League and the EFL is starting to go that way. When I say fight I mean by direct action, proper lobbying of key decision makers, action to sponsors to show them associated with the corrupt practices. Target the businesses of bent owners. That kind of action.
Or of course, just don’t go to watch your team and give up.

I don't understand how any fan of those 12 clubs could complain if they were banned from UEFA competitions for a few years. It's not as if they were planning to participate in the UCL anyway.

Well if you do all the above fair enough.

What is this crap about fans missing out if the sly six get punished? If they were banned from Europe for say, five years, each club would still be able to play for three titles every season. There is a good possibility of two of the six doing exactly that next season. A European ban would hit them harder as it would be a longer term of financial loss, a fine now would be petty cash to these sort of people.

UEFA have already welcomed them back, cooked them a stew and tucked them in. There is not a chance of a significant European ban. The PL is the only route and that feels unlikely

I agree mate. My point is everybody keeps saying the fans will suffer, but my arguement is they wont. If Spurs and Arsenal fail to get into Europe nxt season they still have three titles to go for.

I just can’t get my head around thinking that somehow our sport is not worse off since the start of The Premier League.
How many different winners of major trophies in the 30 years before the PL and how many since? How can that be good?
On this forum ( since 2008) I’m fairly sure I’ve never seen a Blue post about how great all this PL money is, pity about the trophies. Money is not what Football is for ffs.

Are you surprised?

UEFA's whole budget is built around CL revenues, and a rival league threatened them with utter ruin. In the short term, they don't have a choice.

Now that they perceive the existential threat, I would expect them to work with Bayern and PSG to figure out how to stamp it out (which is likely to be great for those two clubs, by the way).
