2023/24 Dominic Calvert-Lewin

Not really - the great Carlo knew how to play him at his best. It just so happens that EVERY other manager has also started DCL when possible
Carlo also had Richarlison, Sig, Digne & James putting chances on a plate for Dom.

That season he also went like 14 games without scoring after his purple patch.

Unsure why he gets defended so much,

I like Calvert Lewin, he will never be prolific, but, he brings a lot of other things to the table. We look a much better team when he plays. All that being said, I hope he signs an extension here, if not I hope we can move him on for £20 mill +. If, on the other hand, he decides to run his contract down, I hope we play him every week and make him follow a full training programme, as the other players do. If he breaks down so be it, it's not our responsibility to be nursing him through the season in order for him to organise a very lucrative free transfer for himself.

Wanting £35m from Newcastle for a non-prolific striker in the last year of his deal was a ridiculous valuation, but even at £20m (a fair price) can't sell a player if he doesn't want to leave. A year from now, as a free agent, he'll be in the best possible earning position for what will probably be his last big contract, and will have more options available to him - including staying here, I'm sure.

So basically, doing a Barkley.

Well at the end of the day, football is his job, each player is going to act in their own best interests however they see fit, whether we like it or not. He'll be 28 next summer, will have been here 9 seasons if he sees out his deal, and might want to go somewhere else whilst he has the opportunity to do so.

It's also possible he wants to stay here but is waiting to see what happens with the ownership and with Dyche. I imagine our contract offer to him will stay on the table as long as he wants and might even be improved upon in the future, so it's not really a losing situation for him either way.

Really hope he does a U-turn and signs the new deal, but it’s looking very unlikely at this stage. Not convinced in our ability to find a good replacement either (I back Thelwell all day for any position other than striker).

People go on about missed chances and sure he had his fair share last season, but we create so little that I’d imagine the pressure to put every single one away ends up being counterproductive. Watch Liverpool if you want to see truly wasteful players. Salah needs about 5 to score 1.

Exactly - he then got 20 or whatever goals.......cant you see the issue?
