2023/24 Dominic Calvert-Lewin

Who wouldn't dream of a striker at the club who has the Ability to create his own chances if none are coming his way.
But we don't have a 'Bergkamp' in our Squad. We have Dom who was out injured for god knows how long and once we get him back playing, we don't play to his strengths or in a way he is gonna get great returns, as he's all over the pitch.

Like him or loathe him - The stick he gets on here is taken to far...

Where? What stick does he get? He's got 8 goals in open play in 3 years. You think that not questionable? And if questioned then thats classed as giving him stick? Behave. There isnt a forward in world football with those stats that wouldnt be.
It was a valid point about does he ever score goals created for himself because i cant really remember any. Are you suggesting that forwards at other clubs even around us dont occasionally do that? If calvert lewin had scored that goal that the luton striker scored against us at the end of the season a few on here would have declared a bank holiday.
After 3 years of virtually nothing out of him(injuries or poor form) you think his position at the club warrants no debate other than thinking the sun shines out of his arse?

1000% spot on! Every line, nail-on-head. Why so much of the fan base overlook or dismiss or excuse the primary thing he's in the team to do is beyond me. 54 league goals in 8 seasons here says it all. Not even 7 a year average. We'll never get back to where we want to be if we're hanging our hat on a striker with that kind of output.

Do have to wonder what the end game for Dom is here. If he's not going to sign a new contract then I would absolutely give him the Barkley treatment and keep him at arm's length.

Take whatever we have and try and buy his replacement now and let him linger on the bench and reserves while he runs that contract down. We don't owe him opportunities to play if he wants off and I'm sure he will struggle to make more than he's on now if he has a fourth consecutive season of poor goal scoring numbers.
Yeah if he has in fact rejected a contract then we need to be doing whatever we can to get shut of him now, and then let him rot for the season if we can’t get shut…. Be lucky to be getting any good opportunities next summer.

In an ideal world we'd be able to play hardball and say "either sign or leave or spend the next year not playing" but in reality, it doesn't work like that any more. Not with the power players have, plus there's also a potential legal/HR issue it could perhaps land the club in with the Players Union if he feels he is being unfairly treated (it's not like he's refusing to play or gone on strike, he's still upholding his end of the employment contract).

Can't sell a player if they do not wish to leave, and if he wants to bide his time and see what doors open for him as a free agent so he can get the best deal for himself, he wouldn't be the first player here to do it. And don't forget - Dyche played him 33/38 games in the league last season, including going about 20 games without a goal, and his place was still assured virtually every week. He's Dyche's No1 striker and he wont not select him because of contract talks.

Its not even really that. Its this you cant question the atrocious return without this you loathe him nonsense. Comes over as a nice fella. But then so is my next door neighbour. Doesnt mean id stick him up front for Everton.

They can make it quite uncomfortable for them though, only need to see Niasses treatment under edamhead and more recently Demarai Gray said it was basically made clear he had no chance of playing hence the move to the ME.
If a footballer has annything about them they will go for the good of their careers imo.

That said, If DCL doesn’t sign this window, I think he will be played as often as he can be, think the club let it play out and see where the cards fall at the end of the season.

At best, it's a very grey area. DCL seems like a nice enough guy but if the club said you'll never kick a ball here again, or gave him no squad number, or no locker, and put him out in the carpark or wherever it was Niasse was banished to, I could imagine an army of sports lawyers and Players Union reps being all over that if DCL made a fuss about it.

He may be thinking the best thing for his career is to leave next year - he'll be 28 years old, in his prime, might be his only shot at ending up at a not "top level" club but a Spurs/Villa/Chelsea esque type, just because he'd be a low-risk freebie for them.

Without him we were absolutely atrocious and couldn't even hold on to the ball.

Fully agree with you on this bit (not sure why it didn't quote in full on my previous post).

If only there was someone at the club whose job it was to work with the players every day and was employed based on apparently having the skills to develop them, improve them, coach them. I can't quite put my finger on it, but hopefully if we get new owners that might be something they could look into...?!...

If he plays this season with the personal view he's putting himself in the shop window ive got no gripes with that. We might get a season out of him. I feel the clubs done well to him over the past few years but if he's looking to walk away with a good deal i wouldnt lose any sleep over that. Its football today in the main.

"However, in what was a late twist, Telegraph Sport revealed that talks collapsed after Newcastle could not find a buyer for Wilson, and any deal to take Calvert-Lewin to the North East was swiftly dismissed."

So it wasnt DCL that tanked the Newcastle move, it looks like Newcastle pulled out.

If Thelwell was trying to extort £35m for a low-scoring striker in the last year of his deal, I don't blame Newcastle for walking away. They'd be mad to pay that price (Mike Ashley might after two days on the beer, but not the current ownership).

Do you think he'd do a job though?
My next door neighbour is an elderly Chinese woman, and I'm pretty sure even she wouldn't go 20 games without a goal (plus she's fractionally more of an aerial threat than Maupay so that's an added bonus I guess...)
