European premier league bombshell.....

Someone should start a competition where only the league winners from each european country go into the draw.
Maybe the first round could be seeded somehow but after that its a random draw so the best two teams could play each other in the next round.
A straight knockout competition. And if you get knocked out well thats it for that season.
They could do the same for the winners of the main domestic cup.

I don’t much like change and wasn’t sure about the change to how it is now but I do prefer the current Champions League format more than the old European Cup straight knock out format.l.
We also have to admit that it is a type of mini European League but they couldn’t get away with calling it that, hence ending up with the poor Champions League name.

When Champions from European countries have to play qualifiers against sides that haven't even won their league while teams who finish 3rd in some leagues get right into the group stages says it all. Porto could finish 2nd and then have a qualifier against say, Levski Sofia who might be champions. Only one winner 9 times out of 10.

Two tears ago the final was played by two sides who weren't champions of their own country. Can't be bothered checking but I bet thats not the only time. I don't think either had won a pot in a good few years either let alone the league. It's a racket and it always will be.

I'd rather watch Swindon vs MK Dons in the Johnstons Paint Trophy.

Really interesting - for some perspective, the so-called big 6 are all in the top 14 European clubs based on Co-efficient. Leicester are next best below the likes of Celtic, Braga & Genk in 51st, so safe to say the "big 6" are locked in.

Where it becomes really interesting, in terms of coefficient rewards, UEFA measure success in the CL and the Europa league equally, which might see the Europa league being treated way more seriously if for example Man United are struggling for league results but are trying to keep their #2 ranking (they are the second highest PL team at present)

What I gather from this, is that European Super League is absolutely nowhere. It is now seen for what it is, a complete bluff to try and position themselves for thos power grab.

The EPL saw it for what it was, and told tghem to sling it. I hope UEFA do the same. There's clearly no fudnign and no commercial investor appetite for that super league, and when you scratch away at the numbers you can see why.

The PL should go on the offensive now as well. Boot the two sides negotiating (United & Liverpool) for negotiating behind the backs of the rest, and make the other 4 sign long term committments to the PL (10 years +) with massive penalties for breaking it. (Essentially having to hand back revenues for each year that they don't break away).

They won't, but something like that would soon put an end to the scab behaviour of certain clubs.

I agree with your logic here - but I think you are missing one key point, whether a European Super league or Fifa backed model, everything is being modelled towards teams appearing concurrently in both to the best of my knowledge.

There is absolutely no way, sides will be playing in domestic league, the champions leagues and the super league concurrently. That is absolutely not the plan.

The plan is to try and scare people with some existential and unworkable nonsense that a super league is even vaguely feasible (which it's been seen not to be) to try to grab more power. There's a reason why when we were promised information nothing was forthcoming.

For sure

But what UEFA are trying to model is a changed CL - not a second tournament, Fifa are trying to offer an alternative; again involving league participation

Well again I don't think either of those statements are true.

These proposals are not from UEFA. And FIFA have statd they have nothing to do with the alternative.

Greedy clubs are looking to siphen off more of everyone elses money is what is occurring.

I wonder where players stand in their contracts if they want to play for thier countries but this rulong doesnt allow them. Think there will be some legal ramifocations here.

European competition has basically devalued the English cup competitions to a point that even though we'd all welcome a trophy. Logic would see a benefit to us losing to Shef Wed so having fewer games, giving us a better chance of CL or EL. Like It or not having CL opens the door to buying the better players and lifting the profile of the club in general.
