European premier league bombshell.....

Uefa are apparently planning to propose that 2 places in the champions league will be reserved for 2 teams that are the highest European coefficients, that have not qualified for the champions league via their league position or by winning the competition, from 2024.

So in theory, there could be 6 Premier league teams in the Champions League in the future, if for example, Spurs win the league, Leicester 2nd, Chelsea 3rd, Man City 4th, Man Utd 5th and Liverpool 6th.

Man Utd and Liverpool could still be in the champions league with the top 4 because of their previous record in the competition.

Its not mentioned what would happen to the europa league places though, so it could get complicated

Slowly turning away from football with every passing day.

Cant wait for the normal fan to walk away and let the league become a glorified sham with fake crowd noise - sooner the better for me.

Once people start cancelling satellite sports subscriptions they will soon change their tune. The greed in football is (and has been for a long time) beyond the pale. The so called big clubs holding UEFA over a barrel and vice-versa. I can't ever see a breakaway European league happening. This chat happened years ago and nothing came of it. Footy in 20 years wont be anything like it is now though. Its slowly dying in-front of our eyes and I feel for the next generation who won't know what celebrating a goal as its scored actually feels like.

basically they want to protect their big clubs from a bad season. If United or Liverpool miss the top 4 they will be straight back in.

Yes that's the idea of it. Its not just the Premier League though. I think this started years ago, one of the big Italian teams finished outside their top 3, it might have been AC Milan in 2014 and they wanted to somehow involve them because they had been in the champions league every season since 99/00.

Yeah that rings a bell with me but I think it was before 2014 wasn't it? I remember a big drama about it along the lines of "How can you have a Champions League without AC Milan revenue" or some nonsense. They don't care about actual rules and fairness. It's whatever puts more money into UEFA and the clubs coffers. Thats why the gap just keeps widening year on year.

I think its more of a "middle ground" rather than making it 100% closed shop, because actually most of the established top European teams qualify for Europe each year anyway, this just gives those top clubs a safety net, if they have a bad season. There is an argument that it could make the competition tougher, because you have 2 better teams in it, working under the idea that an established big club would be tougher to beat than smaller club from a lesser league.

I see what you're saying mate but it widens the gap. FFP was supposed to bring a certain level of balance yet the likes of David Luiz get flogged around for ridiculous fees at a time and you realise clubs will find ways around it. I prefer the FA cup anyway, screw them.

Milan and United have been the clubs pushing something like this for awhile because they both fell off about the same time.

The question of course is why any club deserves a safety net in a competition.

Yet another low for football.

This is also bad for the “integrity” (yes I know,) of the P/L.
For example, let’s say Liverpool and Man U are both having poor seasons but are still in the champions league or F.A. Cup in the last part of the season. They both would know they ain’t gotta put any effort into league games and can save the players for the cup games AND the teams they’re playing in the league games benefit cos they ain’t playing against the first team players.
A heap of 5hit!

P.S. I like the way whoever posted this left Arsenal out of the equation LOL.

Someone should start a competition where only the league winners from each european country go into the draw.
Maybe the first round could be seeded somehow but after that its a random draw so the best two teams could play each other in the next round.
A straight knockout competition. And if you get knocked out well thats it for that season.
They could do the same for the winners of the main domestic cup.
