European premier league bombshell.....

It'll be like a league then. Some games are bad. Some are good. Some have something riding on it.

Just so happens it's got glamorous names.

The problem with the another league format is that there's no real incentive in their domestic leagues
But leagues have games that matter at the top and bottom. That's how they can sell the whole package. If no one could get relegated TV wouldn't be paying for nearly as much as West Brom vs Burnley never matters and is never worth putting on. This won't have anyone at the bottom playing for anything after December or so. I just don't think anyone will be watching.

Now if they made it 8 teams into the knockout you'd be getting somewhere, but at the same time that makes a 30 game league season pretty pointless. I don't know the answer, I just think they need to see that not every game is going to be as great as they think.

Well for as long as I can remember, winning a domestic/cup meant entry into a UEFA competition. They have messed around over the years, but the premise has remained.

Now, there would be no, or at best, watered down, UEFA competition. Everton could win the league, Liverpool could get relegated, and Liverpool would still be in this FIFA thing. Makes no sense to me, other than short term cash boost for 18 clubs.

Happy to be proved wrong.

Yep - im sure UEFA would remain adamant that their competitions continue & I would guess if this happened (which seems very unlikely) ultimately you would have one UEFA comp, which was a hybrid of current CL and Europa league, paving routes like top non FIFA league teams in PL, FA cup etc etc.

absolutely spot on with the bizarre nature of Liverpool relegated and continuing in European table. Regarding short term cash boost, I disagree - this model is an attempt to secure in the long term, the European TV revenue, with no risk of missing out.

Just the money clubs protecting their own positions. No worrying about where they finish in the domestic league as long as they're in the lucrative money league is all the matters.

There will still be a European cup. Just not with any of the teams in this new league. So anything they do domestically has no effect elsewhere.

"The top-placed teams in the league would then play in a knockout format to conclude the tournament, with prize money for the winners expected to be worth hundreds of millions of pounds each year."

No relegation.

There hope is of course for it to be a long term cash boost. I think honestly they see the goal as a continent wide franchise system.

It may be an attempt, but that doesn't mean it will be succesful.

I am also right in saying, this would be run by FIFA? In which case, I would be very surprised if UEFA would want to wind down any of their competitions? It would be seen as an active competitor. It may well even outlaw the competition itself. All very messy. You could end up with a PL, CL, EL and European PL.

I know, and I'm saying that relegation at least traditionally is what keeps a large number of league games interesting at the end of the year in a way they won't be in this even if it is "big" clubs playing.

This making domestic leagues irrelevant, which is what they want.

Which is fine by me. They still have to play in the domestic league. If they decide to treat it like the league cup, doesn't matter.

The club's names are the draw to their world wide audience which is still there. How they play doesn't matter.

We were both asking each other the same q at the same time!

I will put something forward on it too more substantive below, but essentially I agree. I think quite quickly the aim will be to play around the world, and potentially bring in a Brazilian, Argentinian, USA side as well as probably a Chinese/Asian team.
