….surely the arrival of Messi will end any interest PSG had in Kean. It’s all a bit underwhelming we could do with a progressive signing or two to give everybody a lift.

That's because we probably are...We had Richarlison, James, Iwobi and Gordon for 2 wide spots.
Now we have 6 players for the wide positions and youre saying Townsend and Gray are "squad depth".
Are you certain we need 6 players for 2 positions?
Keane was given a new contract when he should have been sold.
Allan should also be sold if Benitez is intending to use him and Doucoure as 2 centre mids.
We still need 5 quality players for the squad, I didnt state we would sign them.
Currently were making signings akin to a relegation favourite.
I think the figure speculated around the time of Kean's signing was £50k a week in wages.
That falls into the same bracket as the new deadwood signings of Townsend and Gray.
I doubt we'll sell unless the transfer fee is high enough to largely impact our profit and sustainability level. Otherwise, i suppose he'll have to be replaced with someone on lower wages and costing a far lower fee.
Theres still 3 weeks to go but this window looks like a cost cutting exercise -- which is fine as long as we shift out deadwood rather than adding to it.
Stop calling them deadwood, mate. When they’ve had actual game time, then you can slate them all you want, in the mean time, they are new Everton players. Perhaps even wait until the window closes before trying to second guess what Benitez is thinking by replacing non players with cheaper players.I think the figure speculated around the time of Kean's signing was £50k a week in wages.

Not a love in on my part just frustrated as we once were better than them now we are years off them. The love in for Leicester is nauseating.
We’ve spent a fortune over the last few years, on crap. Coming home to roost now.The powers that be getting what they wanted out of FFP finally.
Clubs like Everton and Wolves hamstrung, Villa needing to sell their best player to spend whilst the Utds and Arsenals of this world can throw millions around.
City signing Grealish
Chelsea signing Lukaku
Disgusting - why the PL can allow it when all it does is make the product of the league poorer overall and more predictable.
Yeh, we defo had our chancesWe’ve spent a fortune over the last few years, on crap. Coming home to roost now.
….whilst the Townsend & Gray signings are ’safe’ rather than ‘progressive’, I think it’s a wrong to call them deadwood.
Our deadwood are the multiple expensive signings on big bucks that we can’t shift because they failed to perform.
Its a basic lesson to Brands & a succession of managers, the big signings have to produce. Too many of ours haven’t.

We are more than a right back away, if and when James goes and our suspended player is unavailable we only have Iwobi to play ten who has done the square root of naff all in his time with us. We are also lacking a box to box player and back up striker if Kean goes.OzyToffee said:
We aren't that far off actually; assuming we only move the deadwood off, all of whom have been cited here regularly, we only need 3 more given the additions and Kean returning. RB, and 2 midfielders, if Kean leaves then somebody that can play the number 9 role as well as across the front 3. Even allows the deadwood to leave without replacing; would like more of a clean out but being realistic for all the reasons mentioned above. This would give us a very decent squad even if you think the additions aren't top 6 material they are backup / given a new chance at a small cost. Willing to give the manager strong support based on his previous players comments also, just the style we need and he has plenty of experience and the motivation to stay here along time given his personal situation unlike the previous lot.
I did mention RB as a position and yes would have liked all slots to be filled for a full pre-season but for whatever reason they aren't; most likely due haggling over the price and deals being made closer to the end of the window just like most years. Trade off I guess between a few million now or cheaper in a few weeks if we are confident enough and deals done with agents behind the scenes. Don't get me wrong if we don't sign a starting RB I will be first on here calling for Brands head. I just see 3 players more as our max seeing we have already signed 3. If we sell a starter obviously needs replacing as I mentioned with Kean.

As of yet, they are new players who replaced non-players for 100k per week + less money, not deadwoodDeadwood is usually a term given to players who arent good enough for the squad and should be moved on.
Id say thats a pretty accurate word for Townsend and especially Gray. Bofh players will end up staying for the duration of their contracts as 90% of our deadwood has done since Brands took over.
Im not allowed to swear on here...donkeys?
