Everton Under-18s made it three wins on the bounce after securing a hard-fought 3-1 victory over Newcastle United at Finch Farm.

Delial Brewster opened the scoring within the first minute for the young Blues but Callum Smith equalised almost immediately for the visitors.

Beni Baningime then fired home after a quarter of an hour, before Callum Lees confirmed the three points for the Toffees deep into the second half.

Everton were ahead just seconds after the kick-off as winger Daniel Bramall raced down the left-hand side and found Brewster, who took one touch before supplying a cool finish.

But the lead only lasted a minute as the visitors immediately got themselves back into the contest when midfielder Smith fired past Ciaran O’Loughlin in the Everton goal.

The game didn’t show signs of slowing down with both teams pressing forward at every opportunity and on 16 minutes the young Blues got themselves back in front.

Midfielder Baningime, who was impressive throughout, cut in from the right-hand side before firing a left-foot strike from outside the box beyond the Newcastle goalkeeper.

Winger Michael Donohue had two chances to extend his sides lead but on both occasions Nathan Harker in the Newcastle net was quick off his line to clear any danger and ensure the scoreline going into the break remained 2-1 to the hosts.

Newcastle had the opportunity to get themselves level on the hour mark when the referee awarded a penalty after keeper O’Loughlin was adjudged to have brought down a Magpies player in the box.

But O’Loughlin, who was given a yellow for the foul, didn’t have to move as Mackenzie Heaney missed the target from 12 yards out.

Brewster was a proving to be a handful for Newcastle’s backline and he nearly grabbed his second goal of the game following good work on the left-hand side from Spencer Myersand Donohue.

The striker received the ball from Myers before turning the defender brilliantly but his effort went just wide of the target.

The hosts, however, extended their lead just minutes later and ultimately confirmed the victory when defender Lees headed home Nathan Broadhead’s pin-point cross with less than 10 minutes remaining.

The win leaves Everton just one point behind league leaders Manchester City and, speaking after the game, Under-18s coach John Doolan has challenged his players to continue to build on their impressive form.

“We are looking more at the performances because its consistency levels that we are trying to get the lads to have rather than winning the points.” he told evertonfc.com.

“If we continue to get good consistency levels off them and they are playing well and performing the way we want, I think the three points will take care of itself.

“As long as we’ve got them playing well and playing the right way that’s enough for us.”

I recorded and watched England u17 1 - Guinea 1 at the u17 World Cup, Tom Davies and James Yates played the 90 mins. Got to say I was disappointed in the overall England performance, and our two didn't make a huge impression. It was very comparable to watching Ledson / Kenny in the Eufa Final 16 months ago , even shirt numbers , 4 and 2 were the same, Davies playing Ledson role , Yates Kenny's right back. Yates hardly got forward in an attacking sense at all, it was deep in the 2nd half before he made a cross . Davies was ok , good distribution but at times the "play from the back" style just resulted in them losing the ball in their own half. Yates was caught out a few times too far up and slow to get back. It seemed like they started off 4 2 3 1 but disintegrated into 4 Delofeus up front taking on their man when others were in a better position, with 2 in midfield. As a result, Davies and Kane were overrun at times by Guinea's fast counter attacking . Kenny at a similar age looked far more dynamic , pacy and mature than Yates.

There's been a lot of talk about what's going on with Ledson's playing time recently, so I thought it was interesting that they interviewed him about the Premier League International Cup. It also mentions that he started in the first cup game and that he's hoping he can use the cup games to impress the first team staff. Maybe they've decided to keep him mainly as a starter for this competition this season? Not sure why they'd do that but this interview seems to imply that they still see him as having a big role in that team and a future first team player.

I would love to see a back four of Kenny, Holgate, Browning,Connolly to see how they could cope at this level , maybe Ledson and Cleverly together too. It's great to see some first team squad members returning but equally exciting should be the mix of youngsters able to learn from them.
