Everton Youth Teams Thread

Could you give us a review please mrb85.
We played fluid football throughout, with every member of the side comfortable on the ball. Some of the one-touch stuff in tight spaces was a joy to watch. The Germans were physically the bigger side and were particularly tough at the back but they didn't really have much else to their game. Aside from their goal I can only recall Robles having to make two saves -- one from a speculative 20 yard effort and another, a very good save, from a downward header to his left. Against that we had at least 4 good chances that we should have buried, as well as a missed penalty.

Our back 4 was particularly impressive. Kenny I thought was exceptional. The Schalke left winger was always keen to take him on but Kenny nearly always blocked him out. Going forward he was excellent until tiring in the last 15 minutes. Browning was a mountain, and like lightning in covering and intercepting. Holgate was his usual smooth self (I can't help but think he's wasted at the back since he goes past people so easily and is brilliant passer of the ball). Oviedo got better as the game went on and was still strong at the end.

The midfield showed much more movement off the ball than the first team. I thought Grant was a step ahead of the rest in terms of seeing things early. Good left foot. Ledson was very strong and linked things up well (though was fortunate not to get sent off for an awfully high challenge). Cleverley was clearly nowhere near full fitness. Pienaar was sharp in his twists and turns (still in my eyes a player with something to offer if and when we play in packs rather than the strung out formation we saw against Utd).

It was a very entertaining match. I thoroughly enjoyed it. As I say, we should have won it. I'd recommend anyone to go to the next one.

Cheers, sounds very impressive.

Holgates passing, Like Stones or Koeman? Meaning good short/mid passing range or can he hit them long as well?

Where do you think he should be playing if not centre back?

I think he'd make an excellent wide right midfielder. a bit Trevor Stevens like.

He can hit accurate long stuff but always prefers to pass along the deck.

He's probably the most laid back CB I've ever seen but not in a way that causes palpitations for supporters.

England u17 0- Brazil 1 at last night's U17 W C. James Yates played the full game at right back, Tom Davies unused sub on bench. Yates had an excellent 2nd half , making more crosses and attacks into their box than all his previous 1 1/2 games at this tournament. They clearly came out with a different mind-set 2nd half , pushing up their full backs - Da Silva at right back was doing the same , and these two were arguably England's best players. Sterling was penalised wrongly for a free kick from which Brazil scored a great goal.
Yates was also defensively sound. When I've seen him at this level prior to this tournament he had club mate Nathan Holland playing 7 ahead of him.Holland is a clever but not overly spectacular player who often did the simple pass to bring Yates into it when he pushed forward. Although they supposedly played 4-2-3-1 last night the front 4 were largely playing the same role .All they wanted to do if they got the ball was show their individual prowess and dribbling skills, with little back tracking . Which is possibly why Yates didn't venture forward too often in the first half - big pitch , hot day , and not getting the ball played to you doesn't encourage forward runs. Anyway , 2nd half was much more like I've seen him play and what he is capable of. Edwards from Spurs seems to be the go to player with all the dribbling skills , like a young Raheem Sterling, but no concept of playing in someone in a better position.
I just don't think some of these youngsters get "play from the back" in that they rarely back tracked to support the defenders or to receive the ball. Kane and Arnold (?) the two defensive midfielders from Liverpool were ok , but hardly exciting, although Kane looks a good prospect for his age , except his corners were pretty crap. Hard to figure out why Davies wasn't brought on for Arnold as players started to tire.
1 point and 1 goal from 2 games speaks for itself. I just don't think their style of play is working in this system in that all the players I've seen playing up front have been individual "dribblers", Anthony Evans would have done well here or a Kieran Dowell type of player, just somebody who would act as a playmaker and release the ball through to better positioned players. It may even be worth playing Davies in a more forward and central position instead of his customary DM role.

That sounds excellent...potential competition for Stones...how long do you think before he becomes part of the first team?
