...he was, Matey, and I like the lad lots but it's possible that RK and SW are not so keen. They are building a side and maybe they don't think any of the U23s fit into it. I could be wrong, I'm just trying to understand why none are getting a chance at a time when the first team are performing poorly.

I wouldn't be surprised if Walsh is a regular on the bench next season. I see a new first choice midfielder taking Barry's place in January, and Barry being on the bench for the rest of the season. Walsh will then take Barry's place on the bench for next season.

I wouldn't really expect to see him til then though.

0-0 so far, 7 pm ko , Dowell making his mark :
19:10 Dowell Magic

Unbelievable skills from Dowell. A flick over one head, a shimmy past another, then a Cruyff turn to evade two more.

19:06 Dowell Shot

Good stop from Portsmouth's O'Brien as he palms an effort from 20 yards from the Toffees' schemer. Tom Davies (the Pompey one) hacks the loose ball out for a corner.
Good to see Dowell getting his mojo back!

i cant be arsed doing it but i suppose it would be telling to look at the previous clubs hes managed to see if any players have came through after he left or had to move on when he was there to get a chance.

I know what you mean! At end of day that comment about the Southampton lad Simms sums up his attitude to me.

Josh Simms is a good example, I'm not saying he's the second coming or even the real deal but he played more u21 games than anyone at Southampton last year and Koeman said he did not even remember him.

The actual quote was something along the lines of:

"I was not aware of him. I watched him play for the U21s and he did not impress me."

hopefully dowell can kick on now, maybe he let his head drop if he thought he'd be getting game time with the seniors.

David Unsworth highlighted the impressive contributions of Tom Davies, Kieran Dowell and Dominic Calvert-Lewin after watching his Everton Under-23 side defeat Portsmouth 3-1.

The young Blues moved two points clear at the top of Group D in the Premier League Cup, following the third round of fixtures, with another three to play.

Calvert-Lewin converted Dowell’s cross to set the Toffees on their way after quarter of an hour, before an own goal and Calum Dyson’s powerful header ensured the Pompey’s late goal was little more than a consolation.

Speaking after the clash on a chilly evening at Southport’s Merseyrail Community Stadium, Unsworth said: “It was a decent performance against a different type of football, particularly in the second half when Portsmouth were very good and caused us a few problems with the long ball.

“We scored good goals at good times, perhaps we could have scored a couple of more - but overall it was a good performance.

“I thought Kieran Dowell was back to his best in the number 10 role. I’m delighted for him because he’s stuck in there and some of his play was superb.

“Dominic [Calvert-Lewin] was a real threat as well and I thought Tom Davies was the best player on the pitch tonight. He was outstanding.”

Unsworth upping the ante, or tipping Koeman's squad moves?

Some of Everton’s table-topping U23s will eventually force their way into the Blues first team, manager David Unsworth claimed in the wake of their 3-1 Premier League Cup win over Portsmouth.

Goals from Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Calum Dyson helped Everton to victory in Southport, despite a late Portsmouth rally.

Unsworth’s side are top of Premier League 2 and now lead group D in the Premier League Cup after two wins in their first three matches.

But despite a run of only one win in 10 matches in all competitions, Ronald Koeman has so far been reluctant to blood many youngsters in his first team.

Tom Davies is one of Unsworth’s squad who has been given a chance in the Premier League this season – albeit only in brief cameos.

He has been in impressive form for the U23s and he again screened his back four with class and composure against Portsmouth, prompting his manager to label him “the best player on the pitch”.

And though he believes there is “no doom and gloom” surrounding the first team’s current form, Unsworth is confident young players like Davies will break through if they continue in this vein.

He told the ECHO: “These lads have got to keep learning, keep listening, keep progressing and keep waiting for their opportunity and I firmly believe it will come.

“I thought Dominic [Calvert-Lewin] was good, I thought Kieran Dowell was back to his best, I thought Callum Connolly was great as well along with Tyias [Browning].

“It’s great to see Tyias get some much needed minutes and he’s slowly getting back to the form that got him in the first team 18 months ago. It was a good solid team performance all round.”

The victory over Portsmouth was only Everton’s third in their last ten matches.

But they remain two points clear of Manchester City at the top of Premier League 2.

And Unsworth believes the standards demanded at a club like Everton mean success in the cup is as important as maintaining their impressive league position.

“It’s important to win every game,” he said.

“We play for Everton, we develop players and there is an expectation that we need to win.

“That doesn’t matter whether it’s the first team, our U23s, our U18s, these young lads want to win every game that they play in and that’s important that the momentum carries on from whatever competition we’re playing in.”

After an impressive first hour at the Merseyrail Community Stadium Everton were cruising at 3-0.

Harvey Bradbury gave Portsmouth a glimmer of hope with an instinctive finish past Mateusz Hewelt, before the visitors wasted several good chances to reduce Everton’s lead further.

But Unsworth was never concerned his side would surrender their advantage, despite having missed several good chances to put the game to bed.

“I wasn’t worried at all – it was a sloppy goal to concede from our own corner,” he said.

“They broke on us and got a bit of a lucky break. But I wasn’t worried. I was quite comfortable all evening.

“You are always looking for perfection and we probably could and should have scored a few more goals but we got three, we missed a penalty and created numerous chances – it was a good performance.”

Koeman's basic point is to give himself an excuse for not playing them.

no it's not.

If, in his opinion, they were ready he'd play them.

In his opinion, they aren't - yet.

I trust his opinion, based on everything he has achieved in his career, over some fans who think the solution to everything is to get kids in.

Holgate is ready and good enough - he's been in every matchday squad.

Davies isn't far away.
