Hilary Benn Sacked From The Shadow Cabinet - wider political debate

Instead, he just panders to the politics of protest and student union debate clubs. In fact, if an election was called tomorrow, the result would be so one sided that it'd be scarcely believable - indeed, I think the only reason May hasn't called a snap election is because she'd be accused of opportunism by simply destroying a completely pathetic opposition.

It's also in their interests to keep Corbyn leader for as long as possible. If they called the election now they get 2 extra years, better to wait until 2020 and get another set of downs for free.

It's the heart of the chipping norton set, and thus can easily be disregarded as any sort of pointer. Tbh, it wouldn't surprise me to see the tories increase their majority, despite a local (tory) council petitioning/criticising camoron over the cuts.
Disagree there. The last two GE results have seen Labour increase it's share of the vote in Witney from 13% to 17%. Cameron just led the country over the cliff in the biggest single vote in modern times and his successor will face the music over that. They can expect to see their majority cut there.

I spoke to someone reasonably high up in the Labour Party a few days ago about the possibility of a snap election and they thought it wouldn't happen because a large defeat for Labour now might result in a Corbyn resignation.

I'm paraphrasing a bit but their words were roughly ... why would May call an election now and give us a better chance of winning the next one, that could reduce her time as PM to five years when hanging on ? With Jeremy still in charge, that still gives her a very good chance of another nine years of Tory government.

There's also the question of whether a PM can call an election. I think it would need the support of two thirds of MPs or a vote of no confidence to overrule the fixed term parliament act

Theoretically the government could vote through a no confidence vote in itself to cause a snap election, but I doubt Joe Public would take kindly to that.

Just a quickie chewee, on CT we need to be lower than our competing countries. WE need to attract business in, that will grow the economy and create jobs. Higher taxes will encourage business to look abroad. As the £500 billion - half from the private sector and 25 form tacking tax issues - nonensense. It takes up to 3 years to train a Tax Inspector to take on business and accountants, even when a company is looked at it can take up to 5 years to get to a settlement which does not guarantee payment! Labour have it wrong BTW the only illegal activity is evasion not avoidance. Infrastructure, what are they proposing - note no details just pie in the sky. On the subject of arm sales, we would lose jobs, far better to talk as I said.

Why do we need to lower CT to a rate considerably lower than other European countries? Because succesive governments (Both Tory & Labour) have refused to invest enough in British business / infrastructure, cautiously opting not to upskill our workerforce against the public balance sheet. When the old manufacturing / heavy industries were in decline we really should have been turning retraining the workforce, instead we are left with many on the scrap heap, their skills redundant in the modern world.

Short term thinking has created the mess we are in, having to go cap in hand to other nations and their companies was in the end always going to create problems. Far too much emphasis was placed on the financial sector in the 80/90 and early 00s

Further details of the £500 Bn plan are here. Nobody is saying the solutions will be found overnight, but you have to start somewhere. The current model is broken and failing millions.

Considering these policies are not election manifesto pledges they are bold. If you compare them to opposition party plans just 1 year after an election they are detailed.
