Improving Everton's Profile

I honestly think that at this point half of the RS following comes from the media portrayal of them. They haven't won the league in 24 years. That's probably anyone under the age of 30 hasn't seen them win the league. They did win the CL, of course, and a few cups, but they're still seen as a massive force and massive club - even though they are clearly not. This is because most followers of any sport believe what they are told.

So we need to get on the good side of the media AND we need to push a message ourselves rather than relying on the media. Most of the British press is pushing an agenda to keep the rich clubs happy (because they have the largest fanbases and the most viewers tune in for them - which is the whole point). So we need to figure out a way around that - and I think a documentary is a good start for the American market. But what else can we do?

We should invest a little bit of money (honestly it's not a huge amount) in video equipment and begin streaming reserve/youth games as much as possible. We should also try to do things like Reddit AMA's with fan groups. How cool would it be to have a yearly thread on here with Roberto Martinez? Or even with Leon. Or some more curated form of Q&A so the trolls are suppressed? Could we do something where we have various (media friendly extroverted) members of the Everton staff do videos documenting a day in the life? Maybe something even bigger?

Being open and accessible is a huge win for any large company these days. Get the brand out there and the supporters will come.

Whats that phrase that dominated the US election? Joe Main Street or something?

Marketing Everton as the Joe Main Street club, the working mans club, the authentic club, that sort of thing. Together with the history stuff, that must be an angle over there, surely.

Getting excited and annoyed now.

Joe Sixpack is what you're looking for there, roydo.

Everton = Authentic, not plastic. Good honest football with passion. It's not about the show in the ultra section, or the glitzy big money stars, it's about grit and true football knowledge and the true voice of the real people of Liverpool who know football instead of pretending to know football. Oh, and history too. Show them the history, with Dixie and the Holy Trinity, and tell them OUR story and why the red [Poor language removed] call us bitter. There's a big, big appetite for that story.

Show them Everton. Everton were the "forgotten man" of Heysel and what happened to English football after. Show them how they have loyally stood side by side with their deepest rivals against the libel and lies through the hellish events of Hillsborough and after for twenty five long years. Tell them the rest of the story. Show them Nev and Dunc and the dogs of war, the Wimbledon game, and the utter futility of life under Agent Johnson, flirting with the drop. Show them what Moyes inherited and and what he left, and show them the promise that is our Bobby. It would make a heck of a 30 on 30, that's for sure. Show them Goodison ("here is our Wrigley, here is our Fenway") Tell them our story. It's an honest and beautiful story.

Done - shot one to Everton and ESPN too haha.

Brilliant! It strikes me that this type of project might be much more amenable to crowdfunding than a stadium. One misperception about Americans in general, that has been eloquently dispelled in this thread, is that we only love "winners." Though that might be true of some segments of Americans, the overwhelming majority of us are programmed from an early age to glorify the rags to riches underdog story. In fact, the Everton story is more than perfect for an American audience because its more of a "riches to rags and a rise back to riches story after a fall." Everton has everything for us, storied history with great success, a grievous fall from grace and a long slow hard-fought fight against overwhelming odds to reclaim glory. We are so ready for this!

Most of the important things have already been mentioned in this thread. We are not the club that will buy success but we have something different and something worth promoting; history, values, positivity and talent.

Martinez has been a very effective promoter of all of the above. Linking the present with the past through the small things aimed at our players like Everton history quizzes and decorating the Finch Farm stairwells with Everton's past glories. I'm guessing not many people outside of the UK know much about Everton's history and how big a club Everton are/used to be. I'm very impressed with the way Martinez gets the message out in interviews and apparently to our players as well. Getting Dunc on the coaching staff, inviting Kendall to Finch Farm, getting Joe Royle involved etc speaks volumes.

Everton in the community is also something to be proud of. It involves people and to paraphrase Barca makes us more than (just) a football club. If I was a sponsor I would definitely want to be associated with all the positive things EITC are doing, in addition to what ever exposure your logo on the shirt/advertising boards gets you. It brings positive vibes and is something that creates positive stories connected to your brand.

Boberto oozes positivity! It's a joy to hear him comment on virtually any topic. And the style of play seems to match his comportment in interviews. There are a lot of people who "like" Everton although they support another team.

Martinez attractive football and the fact that he gives young, promising players a chance to shine is something that is noticed. There have been countless positive articles about Barkley, Stones, Deulofeu and our other youngsters.

I wish Everton would promote all of the above even more; history, values, positivity and talent. Everton are not just another team that bought success. Everton are more than that!

Nice one people.

Portland - good call on Roger Bennett.

We should put him in touch with that new media & marketing feller.

I reckon this is a goer if the right people talk to each other.

As has been said, the US sports channels will lap it up and in the US, rooting for the underdog fighting against the odds is part of the National psyche.

As for material, we have the David France collection - the greatest collection of football memorabilia in the world!
And for good measure, David France actually lives in America.

We are football royalty and should use that too.
In football terms, we are the Queen, Manure are Princess Di and the sh*te are Sarah Ferguson.

For our US supporters, what Everton needs is it's own "Miracle on the Plain" or Iron Bowl moment.
I'd been looking for a college team to support and as a result of those games, I'm an Auburn fan.

So there we have it. Let's show them what we're made of, literally,

Yea, crowd funding for a short Everton doc targeted at the American market is a great idea. I have some equipment and video experience, I would be more than willing to help out, perhaps record interviews with some of our American Boston Evertonians. Why they were chosen, why they love Everton, what Everton means to Americans. I'm sure with a bit of work and club support, Howard would contribute, Cahill could talk about life as a blue and a pro footballer in the US, Use old interviews with the likes of Donovan. Cut all this with the history and passion stuff. Even if fans could put something together that could be shared on US soccer sites, it would be a start.

First thing to do would be to open a dialogue with Rog.

He would be able to fill us in on the potential costs (and possible returns) for such a venture.
Also the logistics, timescale etc.

It's time our side of the story is told and if it takes a few of us on here to do it then so be it.

I would like to say that we shouldn't discount the input of the chairman.
I won't say his name as I'm sure there are a few on this board who have alerts set for his mention just to hurl abuse.
As a producer, he will have many contacts who can make it happen and his romanticism will keep it going once started.

If Roger Bennett really is serious then we can take it to the club, gain support from other websites and supporters clubs and approach David France.

How do we make serious contact with Roger Bennett. Does anyone have an email for him?

I'd write for a start and if a few others follow suit then he might take it seriously.

He responded to me on twitter:
@davidgibb88 I would love to do an Everton doc. like being asked to paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel

Then favorited my link to this topic, so hopefully he has a read.

Anyone on twitter should go on and retweet the crap out of it and comment themselves.

Out of everything I have read I LOVE the documentary idea, with Howard/Cahill/Donavan on it. Maybe one of those ESPN 30for30 ones. Rog Bennett to make it. He is HUGE over here with US soccer fans through Men in Blazers and a mad Scouser/Evertonian.

A well produced, classy piece could go far, put it out right before the start of the season!

Such a good idea it should be mailed to Sun Tan Bob as a serious suggestion....definitely got legs this has.

Hi Bill x

Have people in charge of Everton's profile who are capable of improving it. Incompetence of the middle management is tolerated by senior management. Incompetence of senior management is tolerated by the directors and owners.

I'd be patient if it was a work in progress but fourteen years on it's still the same story. Poor decisions and planning succeeded by some more poor decisions and planning.

Good decisions have been taken on the manager of the football team which has kept the wolves from the door luckily for them. A good decision was made on the Communications Director last summer. He lasted not long on the inside which backs up what I've heard from people who've experienced it too.

And of course Everton to start winning things again which is related to the above and finding someone to put the money into the club that it needs.
