Confirmed Signing James Tarkowski

I'm torn on this because while a huge part of me agrees with all that, we have to improve at both CB and CM or we are 100% going to be in another relegation battle. If Frank really likes Tarkowski and thinks he can solidify our defense, then I'm all for giving him a higher wage and using what little funds we'll have on midfield additions. It's a gamble but one that I think we have to take in this financial situation. I'd rather this gamble than the one taken on Bernard, because Tarkowski has the chance to be a foundational player for a few years, whereas Bernard was always going to be a luxury piece and rotational player due to his physical constraints.

Overall, I'd like this club to stop handing out wages and switch to recruiting more abroad. Use our competitive advantage of being a PL club to sign players who are currently making a fraction in France, Germany, etc. But we need a solid defense to make any progress. The set piece goals against were just so horrendous this season.

The key here is the length of contract I'd say. At three or fewer years it's not much of a gamble in my opinion. Something like five years would increase the chance of it being a disaster.

I think you're right. That may have to be our market. Lets face it there are some decent players currently in this league that other clubs have bought from those leagues.
We payed the same money for doucoure as brighton did for mwpeu from salzburg.
Our recruitment has been nothing short of diabolical.

Yeah Doucoure and Mwepu is actually the perfect example of this. £20m for a player we know to be average in the league who we have to give a huge wage increase to since he's coming from another PL team. Mwepu was four years younger, huge potential with his floor being as good as Doucoure, and on a fraction of the wage. We should have shifted our strategy years ago by choice, and now unfortunately we probably aren't even able to make those types signings unless we raise money. Super unfortunate, but our margin of error is tiny now.

As much as I do feel we need some bodies on the line CBs(which Tarkowski is) I think a more important signing would be Anthony Barry as set piece coach. Saw some talk of us going back in for him and he may be more open to the move in the summer, but could be silly season waffling
Set pieces were very depressing last year

Maybe necessity will force that much needed shift in strategy. Here's hoping anyway

One in, one out maybe.

I actually am fine with Tarkowski if it is because Mina and/or Keane is going for a fee, even a small one. But it has to be a short deal.
It wont be.

Hes gonna be wanting at least 3, possibly more, its his last real contract.

Cant say ive ever been a massive fan, but its a real no brainer, hes a proven Premier League defender, with vast experience in the league, with a superb injury record, available for 0 pounds. You wont find a better deal all summer.

The only thing is he's proven playing one way. We shouldn't be playing that way.

We finished 16th we need stability this fella on a free makes so much sense. Whilst I agree we should focus mostly on youth we need some reliability/leadership in that back four/five.

Our defense conceded 66 goals. To be honest, I am not sure if only Tarkowski is enough to improve our backline. But a free agent, in theory, it makes sense to try for Tarkowski and sell M.Keane. I will always thank big Mike for sparking that comeback against Crystal, but he's part of the backline that conceded nearly all of the 66 goals and scored 2 og.
