We have an aging Coleman and an injured untested Patterson. Coleman may also play as part of a back three. It sort of makes sense especially if he is on a low wage. Getting rid of players is usually a problem if they are on a high wage. Truth is we don’t have the money for a quality 24 players in the squad. We either compromise across the board and buy cheaper or have some limited players who can fill in for a couple of games, who are also unlikely to rock the boat. He’s the equivalent of a 3rd goalkeeper.

What I find odd is that it's not as though he's been constantly in and around the first team since he was a teenager, like, say, Davies.

He was completely off the radar during the years where you might lash him on for a bit of youthful exuberance, before finally being integrated after failing at a lower level.

Cheap squad filler.

Trying to put an even mild positive spin on it but struggling. Might need every penny for other areas and at the end of last season we had bare bones at the back.

He wont play much. But thats not much consolation.

Improved contract as well. So not only are we going to keep him, we’re actually going to be forking out more of our already limited budget on him for 3 years. It just feels like they have learnt nothing from the lucrative and overly long contracts we’ve thrown around like confetti for the past 5 years.

I think Lampard likes him. It's not unreasonable to ask why. Perhaps the bigger question though, is should a manager have such a big say in a decision.

I'm not as hard as Kenny as some people. Thought he had some good games like Leeds at home. But it doesnt make a lot of sense to renew him at 25 years old and 3rd choice. Like he should be behind Nkounkou now.

So what is the point? He is never gonna push anyone to improve! At 25 he is as good as he will ever likely to be... this deal will take him up to the age of 28.

When you see Kenny & Rondon in the squad it isnt hard to see why we were fighting relegation as soon as we get injuries to the starters and the back ups all come in.

This club has learnt absolutely nothing, more of the same next season, we will be in a relegation fight again. I will also re-iterate those expecting big chages are deluded, those saying we need 2 CBs, 2 CMs and a CF need to get real.

If we are getting Kenny resigned and Tarkowski then clearly no money is available. I notice all our links are to defenders, how many can we get in one team?
The point is that he's committed and will give his all whenever he plays. That's not something all the rest of the backup players can offer us.

I'm not pretending that Kenny signing a new deal is exciting news or anything but don't see it as the insult some are making out.

With the FFP situation we're in as well, the club will be having to make certain decisions that they may not have needed to otherwise.

Lampard eventually realised that he had to stop picking him, but then if he likes him on a personal level, he probably won't care if the club wants to pay him to play U23 football until he's 28.
