2021/22 Jordan Pickford

I think we need to try to turn over the entire club in the next 3 to 5 years. No one is exempt at this point.

Look at West Ham in 17/18 versus now. Basically everyone is new. And even Antonio who stayed is sort of new because he plays a completely different position now. That's a rebuild we can in theory model ourselves on. West Ham had Adrian playing at a similar level to Pickford then. They've upgraded because they could. We should if we can.

With respect, thats an entirely different issue. Player turnover that is. And whilst I agree, if in 5 years time we still have the same keeper, I wont be that fussed.

Pretty much any other player though, agree.

I look at post shot xG, a different stat designed to measure goalkeepers. It factors in where the ball ends up with regard to the goal. So a shot off target is automatically a 0 because it could not have been a goal. Standard xG doesn't do this and as you've said isn't useful for measuring goalkeepers as a result.

Basically you take the PSxG and subtract out the goals conceded. You want have a positive number per 90 minutes. Pickford doesn't. The only year he has in the last three was last year and even then he was still like 13th in the league or something. He's got time left this year but I don't see anything to suggest it'll swing massively.

It's just one metric but I like metrics and there aren't tons available. As I said what I see when I watch makes sense though. I don't feel like it is wrong.
What I will say is that in my opinion he's been good for a whole year now. Ever since the Anfield win. Before that he was all over the place, especially after the mistake at Anfield that lead to the Origi goal which I think massively affected him.

This "good" year he's had has coincided with us being absolutely abysmal. So I think in a decent year for us he'd be doing quite well statistically. I'd be interested to see how he performed in his first year with us, player of the year if I remember rightly.

Or was that the year Koeman tried his best Benitez impression to get us relegated?

Any idea who these competent keepers are?
Take your pick really. I through out some names before but the list is pretty long, half of Germany, Italy, Spain and France have keepers who are in theory as good and cheaper. You'd have to evaluate who suits the PL and I'm not qualified for that. Walter Benitez is one who intrigues me. He's been really good 3 out of the last 4 seasons. Also Rajkovic who again had a down year last year but has some really high peaks.

He was fine his first year and even a bit better the second. Not exactly high peaks but that guy would be fine. He's not that guy today.

I think there are several reasons I'd see that as massively disappointing.

It isnt my ideal scenario. But looking at the first team squad, (not a clue who might be coming through in the next 3/5 years of yoof), Pickford is the absolute least of the positions that need serious surgery. And by positions, I mean the outfield defence, midfield, and upfront. Gordon looks promising, etc etc etc, but as units all 3 are not great. Replacing Pickford will not improve the teams ability to stop goals .

But it can and with a better keeper will. We aren't going to win the European Cup even with prime Buffon but to say better goalkeeping won't help defies logic.

Bit of a none answer for me. If you think we'll get that much more from Pickford's sale that would add much to the coffers after buying a replacement that has been untested at premier league level in order for us to build our team then i think you're deluded. The difference wouldn't even buy a centre back then we're left with someone who might be better but could be worse than our existing keeper. Think we'll just have to disagree as i want all our available money spending on a new defence and some grit in the middle of the park rather than use it replacing Pickford with someone who is about the same quality. But hey that's why its called my opinion and you have yours. By the way I'm honestly not a massive defender of Pickford (he certainly has his limitations) i just think there are bigger fish to fry at this point in time.

We could have taken Areola off Fulham if PL experience is a thing you want to focus on (you shouldn't, but that's another conversation). Every little bit of money is going to start counting for us and that includes on the wage bill. Any net positive is worth pursuing.

Thats your issue. Logic. Football isnt logical.

Will a far better keeper improve the team? Of course it will.

Will a far better midfield and defence make Pickford let less goals in? Of course it will.

Will a far better keeper come to Everton? lol

Can we improve the midfield and defence easier? Yep.

Would Everton sell Pickford if a decent offer came in? Yep.

Would we replace him with a far better keeper? Unlikely. (Need to spend money on said midfield and defence) That said, we signed Nev from some no mark club, but he was a one off.

Not sure about that one.

Again this conversation is hard to have because you think Pickford is quite good and so the number of keepers who improve is small. I don't think that number is small. So would it be easier to rebuild the whole midfield or find a better keeper? To me it is obviously the latter. Maybe that isn't the most important thing to do but if you can make an easy upgrade I feel like you should.

Its priorities mate.

I do think Pickford is quite good.

I do know that whatever money the club have come the summer will be limited. So. Pay £60m on a world class keeper and keep the dry rot of the defence? Or spend £60m to replace players who are not quite good? Which should make a quite good keepers job easier.

Like I said, if a decent offer comes in, sound. If it doesnt, (it wont), sound.

Jesus 60m lol

Not even remotely what I'm talking about.

Tim Howards biggest fan in unique post shocker.

Anyone who has watched the games for the past year or so would see Pickford as a good keeper...
