2021/22 Lucas Digne

While we should all withhold judgement until we see what price we will receive for the French tattoo, it's heart-warming to see that Senor Benitez believes in the Brian Clough/Peter Taylor approach to football transfers: sell on the very day a player goes over the top. Now, while one could argue a truly astute judge of a player would have punted Digne 18 months ago, it's clear that enough of the fanbase and wider football world have the wool pulled over their eyes on the value of the French national team reserve left-back. This should ensure a tidy sell-on fee for a player who we have definitely seen the best of. He's 29 soon, so we are thankfully doing now what we should have done with Coleman in 2018. Viva La Rafalucion!

Come on will yer. Youlre not that riled and desperate after losing the managerial war to deny those young players the credit they deserve for holding the European champions in thir own midden are you?

FFS, that's churlish to say the least.
Dave, can you not read? I have given them credit and also, realistically said they were fortunate. I am a great advocate for young players. Stop trying to deflect. You have no more confidence in Benitez than I do. You just like to be contrary

You must be kidding.

Look, if we could have a manager better than Benitez and who unites the fanbase I'd take him. Realistically that option doesn't exist.

He is a canny operator and he'll enforce the type of discipline this organisation needs desperately.

That'll do for me, and it's why I'm giving my support to him...and so should anyone to a new manager who hasn't yet been backed with cash and time.

You're looking to me when the fault lies with you...and the others who wont let things rest.

Spot on - if a Pochettino or Simeone wanted the job by all means sack Raffa Cakes tomorrow but the reality is the best out there mid season will be a out of work duffer like Lampard or Pulis.

He has the weight of this club now and the balls to act against vested interests...the vested interests we've all moaned about for years that need attacking and getting shut of.

Get rid of Benitez and that malaise continues.

There is absolutely no choice other than to get behind Benitez for any logical Evertonian.

Seen on Twitter a lot of stats on chances created and assists etc. For a balanced view, is there any stats that exist to show how much he commits into a tackle instead of jockeying the winger and dribbled passed? or stats on getting rinsed by a winger almost every game he plays? Or for losing a marker in the box?

Much as I am unhappy with aspects of Benitez's management and will take all season and results to change that. I have to agree that the players have had things too easy, discipline is needed, no matter who a player is the club is bigger by the same token the manager is.

It is a horse and cart situation.

My position is clear on that: if we cant get top 4 realistically, support Everton apart from the games where we could end up handing Liverpool the title.

That's a very sensible position to hold...unless you're not arsed seeing Liverpool and their fans shoving your face in a title win come May.
"Support Everton apart from..."

Bloody hell.

I don't really care, Dave. Liverpool are far better than us. They are far better run, they have better players, they have a better manager etc. They've already won the CL and PL in the last three years so I don't really care anymore.

He's actually one of the top defenders in the league when it comes to not being dribbled past and he's completed 19/34 attempted tackles this season which puts him at a decent tackle completion rate (the 2nd best in our squad after Allan when you account for how many tackles each player has to make).

The issue is how many times he's had to make tackles. That suggests he is being exposed to a lot of one-v-ones. In the West Ham game for example he attempted 7 tackles. Only once this season has any defender from any other club had to attempt as many in a game.

How about a manager who wins a few games? Oh I forgot 1.7 million

I am firmly in the good signing camp. Love Digne but he has definitely not been as good for a while which includes the 2nd half of Ancelotti's final season and even before then he could be a bit hit and miss. It's fine having a decent attack and assist record so long as your defensive duties are your main priority and not effected. Clearly that is not the case with Digne and hasn't been for a while. We will likely end up making a profit which will help us for ffp and have a younger energetic lad wanting to make a name for himself and play for the manager and team.

It is all good for me, looking forward to seeing him play.

Bluetoff posted that earlier in the thread...eome more below.

If Digne was 22 then i dont think anyone would want him sold.

But we need the funds to navigate FFP so we can sign new younger players.

I'd rather see Everton win than the RS lose.

That's called backing the team.

No wonder you side with Benitez with you both having a small time mentality.

He has the third highest tackles in the squad with 2.2 per game, and he also offers 2.3 clearances and 1 interception per game. In addition, he is only dribbled past 0.9 times per game. For comparison, that’s less than Tottenham’s Sergio Reguilón and Manchester City’s Joao Cancelo.
