2021/22 Lucas Digne

This is very true, just watch, the narrative will be ‘he was never that good anyway’

Yeah me and Ryan disagree on a lot and Christ he can come across badly sometimes (without meaning to) but he's been right on the Digne narrative.

I've got no issue with people saying he's been below par this season, or even in 2021, as long as they can factor other things in. Like I can say that Benitez has been poor but he's been unlucky with injuries, for example.

The sudden narrative Digne has been crap for 18 months or 2 years, as I've seen from some people is just pure balls, and exactly what Evertonians do all the time when a player is about to leave.

If we get decent money for him then fair enough - it's not like we are getting to Europe this season so a younger model is probably a good move - given we have strengthened our hand at right-back too.

That said, even with Myko we seem a bit threadbare at left-back - or are we continuing with Godfrey there.

Hear what you are saying Dan , but like the others posters are saying it all rests on what Benitez says.
As soon as i heard him say it i thought "thats a cheap shot".

Personally if Benitez said it was snowing outside i'd put me flip flops on.

Yeah players need moving on , every club does it , but there's a way to do it right and this isnt it.
You only need to listen to Benitez’s post match comments to know that he’s liberal with the truth or at least fairly out of touch with reality.

Agree Chris but I'd have said closer to £30m.

Also suspect we've overpaid or at least paid more than we could have done for his replacement.

And that is entirely on the manager. The fee is high for someone unproven from a poor league.

Everyone in the world also knows we need cash now. I'm not impressed at all with how this has been handled. There's been too much ego for my liking and the player's value is not going to be maximised.

There are other players who have been significantly worse this season than Digne. It doesn't feel like equal treatment from the manager.

And I find it hard to believe most of what Benitez says. I actually think he is trying to wind up the fans at this point.
I think Benitez needs some time to shape things and we will see what happens.
Imagine falling out with a boss though who then tells the press the detail. Benitez should not have said anything other than Digne was not chosen to play and refused to answer why

I’m not fussed that he is off to be honest. Not played particularly well in my opinion for a long time, even pre Benitez. Maybe it is just me thinking he is a bit meh but it would be interesting to know whether he has figured in MotM polls to any degree in the last couple of seasons

If we can get good money for someone of his age it’s the right thing to do. We can’t just have all these lads join us on champs league style wages, continually finish mid table and then run their contract down til they leave for free. We need funds to re-invest.

Villa look like they’re following our template of getting older players in with little or no resale value - could bite them in the backside in a few seasons when their manager dumps him for the hot seat across the park

As best we know he was ill mate. But I don’t agree it’s that simplistic. Reports afterwards said he questioned Benitez style of play and the manager used him as as a sacrificial lamb.

aThere needs to be an Alpha, I’d accept that. But the best managers can make the point, discoline them, bring the player back in line, than get the best out of them. The best managers can do that.

Digne is one of our best players, you dont sell your best players when you are going head first into a relegation battle - if you want to sell an older player do it in the summer when you are safe, he’s not that old anyway.

The lads been thrown under the bus by the manager in the media, the minute the deal was done fir the Ukrainian lad.

If you were one of our best players or prospective new player, woukd you want to play for a manager like that.
Absolutely this. There seems to be this weird school of thought that a manager can only be an abrasive authoritarian with no communication skills or a pushover that only blows smoke up players arses. The best managers can do both when the situation calls for it, like Fergie. This situation is poor management and nothing else.

We’l agree to differ on that mate, I don’t think we are in a position to be that proud, we are all speculating on the truth, but as I say I think we see an increasing trend of the club and media vilifying players when they want the fans to swallow a departure of a talented player.

Weve needed two left backs since Baines pulled the rug out from under us and retired. We’re heading into a battle now for 40 points, I seen no reason to minimise our quality options. Whatever about our debates on here being polarised, a good manager can man manage players, listen to what they are trying to say and foster a collective. Resukts have thanked since Sep, maybe deal cares about the club and had the right in questioning him, the evidence is there.

Ultimately the mangers remit is to act in the best welfare of Everton football club, does this decision making stronger or weaker, more at risk or less - the winner here is the mangers ego.
and @GrandOldTeam

Just as a point, for that Chelsea game, Benitez confirmed on the Wednesday in the presser that Digne had trained Tuesday and was in the XI but then on Wednesday had called in sick, basically.

In the Chelsea game, Rondon, Delph and Gray were all missing through illness. Gray it turned out to be COVID. We don't know about the other two.

While I know Digne didn't have COVID, if he was ill, at all, like as in even had any slight symptoms, he would have been told not to go to the training ground by Everton's staff. That's the protocol at the clubs. He would have had to get a PCR and wait at least 12 hours for the results.

Benitez played it very cleverly and very slyly, without even lying. His English isn't bad, but he chose to say "Digne said he was will, and cannot play"

Now, most of us all took that as Digne saying: "Gaffer, I'm sick and I can't play" Which given the feeling over why Digne was dropped played into Benitez's hands didn't it, as loads of fans went 'well Digne's the problem'.

When really, Benitez could easily have been saying: "He said he was ill, [therefore] he cannot play."

So it's all open for debate but back to my point (sorry for the long post) Digne would have been told not to go to the training ground if he was ill at all and there's no way he'd have then been able to travel to London?

I wish I was looking too deeply into this but Benitez is an absolute master of PR, for all his faults. He knows what to say and when to say it. He did it with the Reid thing. Because he knew he'd be able to backtrack on it and say "no, I was just using a club legend as an example" etc. I think he overplayed his hand the other day because he was trying to be a smartarse and maybe the fans booing him on Sunday had finally got to his head.

Bernardo Silva has said he wants to leave City for the past two seasons.
