I think if you take out issues with Rafael and look at the deal objectively, it's a good deal. Yes, Digne is one of our better players but all clubs need to player trade to improve. Every club to some extent is a selling club. I think in the short term, Villa will get the better of the deal but I doubt it long term. Digne is a good player, who is out of form, but is also reaching the latter stages of his career. The deal has pros and cons for both teams and only time will tell who got the better end of it.

It is reported that Digne will be getting around 120-150k per week. The Athletic is reporting that Villa want him on a long contract. That is quite a risky strategy that hinges on them qualifying for Europe. Similar to the type of thing we did a few years ago. Given Digne has never been blessed with thunderous pace, and the fact he is entering his later years, there is a high chance Villa are stuck with a very expensive player in a couple of seasons. Obviously, should Villa get into Europe then they will argue that the deal made sense.

Now forget Rafael is our manager, Carlo still is for example and this bid comes in. For us, we bring in £25m for a player who is out of favour, on CL level wages and since Feb has seen his form downturn. Now, there is every chance he moves to Villa and recaptures his form but there is also a chance that he doesn't. Given our need to generate funds for FFP, can we risk turning down that fee for him?

£25 is a good price. We paid £21 for Allan who was 29 at the time. You could argue he had been playing at high level in recent years when we bought him compared to Digne?

Selling Digne now allows us to bring in two new fullbacks and potentially one further signing. The new lads are young and will need time to bed in, that is true. We will also make a significant saving on wages. Personally, I don't think we should be paying anyone over 100K given we aren't in a European comp.

It stings that we are selling Digne. It is not nice he is going to another Prem Club. But we need to raise funds to improve and out of our sellable assets, I'd rather lose him then DCL or Richarlison.

I just wish people would stop with the dramatics like: agent Rafael selling him to ruin us, villa are a step up (3 points and we have a game in hand), we losing our best player, Digne is [Poor language removed] - all of those statements are false and you just sound stupid.

Yeh I'm not so hot on Villa but they certainly seem more stable than us.
Part of Villa's transfer ethos was to sign only <26yos to build value for future sales etc. eg Luiz, Konsa, Watkins, Buendia, Bailey, Cash etc.

However, with signing Young and Ings there was definitely a clear change in mindset to get experience in when it's possible. I think Ings frankly was a rushed "name" signing when Jack left to appease the fans, as he simply cannot work with Watkins up top who is a superior footballer. But it's certainly heartwarming to see us be able to go for players like this with confidence when the opportunity is there for a clear "now" upgrade. Targett is pretty terrible going forward and so Digne represents a clear upgrade - similarly with Coutinho inexplicably joining us; he's a level above what we have.

The youth side is so strong too (Ramsey, Chuks, Archer, Kesler, Bidace etc) so it is certainly promising - but like you Everton fans all know, us Villa fans find it very hard to fully believe in nice things happening to us...

Villa fan here in nothing but peace and respect. Always had huge admiration and love for Everton as a club, being a team in probably the most similar position to Villa over my lifetime supporting them - huge history and fanbase and real "sleeping giants" but ultimately lacking in anything to bloody show for it...

I'm baffled by the Digne transfer. I've looked through the last 30 pages of this thread as it certainly wasn't that long ago that Digne was touted as one of the best LBs in the Prem; 40 odd caps for France etc... what the F has happened to warrant us being able to get him?
25M for a 29-year-old that's been in poor form for almost 18 months is good business in my opinion.

Feel like the fume about this would be nowhere near as bad is Mykolenko had looked like a world beater on Saturday. As it happens it was a player new to England, out of match practise and having to adapt to Rafas wacky tactics playing him out of position

Just worrying that we're selling him and potentially signing longstaff and el ghazi. Of all the players the fans would want us to get rid of, I'm confident digne would be in everyone's bottom 5.

It feels like we're planning for life in the championship if we get longstaff/el ghazi.

Digne fell out with Benitez and supposedly told him he wanted to leave, Gerrard was under the desk sucking Benitez knob whilst this meeting happened and once he'd cleaned himself up Gerrard being the opportunist he is made an offer for Digne.

It seems a deal was struck and Benitez made Gerrard stroke him off as they revealed the news to a bemused looking Digne and his agent. Thanks for your peace and respect mate but I hope your club implodes and ends up spiralling into league 2.

That's been abandoned now as Gerrard will chase short term impact to ensure his reputation/he gets his next gig.

We had it a bit with Ancelotti going for Rodriguez and Allan. Players ready to hit the ground.

The longer term players, Doucoure who we chased for a while, Godfrey etc was our DOF.

Have you told the papers about this? This seems like quite important news.
