Martinez: Everton players fear Goodison Crowd

For those first three minutes we never touched the ball. The crowd were immediately frustrated at what looked like a complete lack of desire to engage. I didn't hear booing at that point, I heard and felt the frustration of everyone around me that we were setting the standard for the rest of the game. At times in the first half there wasn't an Everton shirt within 20 yards of Lukaku. No effort and no desire.

It was three minutes though mate, and even though I understand the principle it was three minutes and we then almost scored.

I think fan favourite Besic going off dampened it as well, which is a massive shame, and also cost us that energy and pace in midfield that we needed.

Back to the point, you can't be getting on their backs that quickly, it's ridiculous. And I definitely heard booing, around the 3.00 mark - literally just before Besic rattled the post.

We have got used to conceding 2/3/4 goals per match. We also have got used to a crap atmosphere at home. It started with the phrase Kopite behaviour . Wear a replica kit to match..Kopite behaviour... sing a song at match ...Kopite behaviour.... have a rant at an under performing player... Kopite behaviour... We never have been the greatest fans in keeping out cool at under performing players. Any lads going in the 80's and 90s will tell u that. The big change is the lack of positive support ... no songs no chants ... The day of the goodison effect is nearly gone. An those who say the goodison crowd is a reaction crowd who are right but this is only new. We created an atmosphere in the and 90s and early 2000 to some rubbish teams. It was worth points every season. Martinez football doesn't help. Telling ye we need a singing section these days... wait for it someone will call it Kopite behaviour....

My point is the manager is making excuses for his poor performance, blaming the crowd for not being able to be a Swansea side in turmoil is pathetic. If it was as bad as he's making out the fans would have stormed the dressing room.

I don't think he's saying that at all, is he though?

He's right in what he says in that the fans and players need to work together to make Goodison an easier place for us to play.

Collymore got it right for me in his post match comments. You cannot start the game as lethargic as we did and hope it will change, because it just doesn't. For me all the crowd was doing was trying to instil some urgency into them. Isn't that what support is about?

I wouldn't say it was booing but fairly quickly at the start you could feel the frustration, at one point there was a few words said with us passing backwards to the defence and that was only a few minutes in. Still I don't agree with the crowd fear thing, we're not playing much better away either.

That's exactly what he's saying.

Disgusting comments from a man out of his depth.

“It doesn’t go along with what we are as a team and doesn’t go along with what we produce away from home. It’s clearly something we need to work on.

“We have six games left at home and they’re vital games for us. We need to make it comfortable for our players. We need to make sure we find a way to perform at Goodison.”

I read that as saying 'it's something we (the club - e.g. fans, players, coaches etc.) need to work on. We (the club) need to find a way to perform at Goodison'.

And I agree with him. The players, his tactics, the fans... all not up to the standard the clubs sets itself to at home.

But would a better way to do that not be to get a chant going, or something along those lines? Sing the John Stones song, or Barkley's or Rom's or Grand Old Team.

Instead, it's just noises of frustration and booing, which makes things a lot worse - obviously, as it has done for the past 16 months...

He's right in what he says in that the fans and players need to work together to make Goodison an easier place for us to play.

That won't happen because him and the crowd are not in tune. He makes decisions the crowd does not agree with.

It started last season when he made baffling substitutions, and players who would be having a good game would be subbed, and the decision would be booed.

It continued with the tip tap football in our penalty box instead of clearing the ball, which has led to so many mistakes and letting in so many goals.

There's John Stones (with all the potential in the world but playing poorly) insulting the crowd by doing 'calm down' gestures when people (who have seen so many mistakes this season) are anxious about him farting around with the ball.

Then there's Tim Howard, the walking embodiment of everything that's broken in the relationship between the manager and the crowd. So many mistakes, yet still in the team, despite Robles showing he's a better keeper in the games he's played.

Howard is lucky to be in the team, but instead of keeping his head down or even apologising for poor form and vowing to do better, he acts defiant/cocky/arrogant, 'to hell with the critics' and sarcastic applause to the crowd on several occasions.

There's several players on the pitch who clearly do not respect the crowd and haven't done for a long time.

People go on about the crowd, but the reasons are there for all of this. You don't get an atmosphere like this overnight, it builds, and it's been building for 18 months.

He said the players don't have the same defensive frailties away from home, because of the fans.

He's blaming the fans for the home performance.

That is, in short, despicable from the manager and to be blunt he should be sacked for demonising paying customers who pay his wages. The fans have nothing to do whatsoever with his incompetency in managing a talented squad of players to get results on the pitch. If they do have a fear of the fans, then that is completely on him, as it's ridiculous that top level professionals should have that sort of insecurity.

It's one of the very worst things I've seen an Everton manager say publicly. I can't swear on here, but they're the comments of a "manure house", and I'd happily see him sacked immediately.
