....he’s had game time, it really is up to him to force his way into the team. This view that he should be left in the team when he’s not effective is odd when points and cup competitions are up for grabs. Kean started against Watford but was poor, he was substituted at half-time and we went on to win the game. Leave him on the pitch and possibly go out of the cup.
You could almost say the same for any fringe player. We can’t use the Premier League to trial players, they need to impress in training and grab their chance when it arises.
Stuck on the wing. Proper Moyes trick that. Prove your worth in a position you are not familiar with. If you don't, I was right not to pick you.
Occasionaly, It works. With very few players mind, most of whom tend to also be cursed with the jack of all trades tag, and never hold down a proper position.
More rarely, you will find a 1 off adaptable player who is basically your best player wherever/whenever he plays, like Rooney or Arteta. But those really are exceptions.
I also don't agree that one's "chance" should be being thrown in once in a somewhat weakened cup side, which has been the case with a few players recently, including Dowell. Hit the ground running and play brilliantly, and the caveat is that it's a 1 off in a game we should be winning anyway against poor opposition, so proves nothing. Don't pull up any trees and you had your chance but didn't take it.
IIts a culture problem, and Silva is partly responsible for it, by sending out mixed messages. We have players who can't get a look in, as mentioned above, and others who do next to nothing week after week but continue to get games.
But like i say, he is only partly responsible. Part of it is also down to the players. More importantly, the senior players. And in the current squad, due to massive overhaul in players, that is the likes of Coleman, Baines, Schneiderlin and Sigurdsson. Other than Coleman, hardly an inspiring bunch is it?
There doesn't seem to be any real togetherness in this squad, any real "chemistry" as Baines himself said in his underhanded attack on Martinez nearly 4 years ago. He was lauded for that by many, because there was an agenda against the manager and he knew it. And he may have been right, even though as a senior player, he should also have been equally responsible for cultivating the chemistry and camaraderie that was missing. And he's still here. And we still have none.
Watching the Howard Kendall film only hammers home how poor we are in this area, and how difficult a job we have in rectifying it. Taking young players like Kean in and making them feel a part of something would be a good way of starting it. Hopefully the likes of him, Davies, Holgate, Richarlison, etc, can maybe create their own culture instead.
