Defensively he's very poor which is obvious and proven as he's been benched whenever possible and is now our 3rd choice right back. For someone that came from an outlay of £20m that is shocking. That's the verdict of managers and coaches that see him day in day out.

Nope mate. In the eyes of the football data lords they are seen as an indicator of poor defending ie the player is out of position and is having to make a last ditch attempt to stop the danger progressing. Defenders are seen as being quite hard to put into stat form, I have seen a few data people saying a better way is to do it with interceptions/clearances/progressive passes as being a good defender is ultimately about reading the game, intercepting the ball and clearing the danger. I'm not saying this is right or anything but that's how a lot of the stat guys view it.
