2023/24 Nathan Patterson

We have to remember he's 21.

He's shown in isolated games he can defend, and attack - it's on Everton to develop him and bring some consistency.

He has age on his side, not sure when Coleman is back but he will be plugged straight back into the team is my guess.

Patterson reminds me of Coleman , going forward is not the issue but defensively some concerns and that loan spell to Blackpool was the making of him. Patterson needs games and 6 months or season in the Championship would be easier for him to ply his trade than the baptism of fire that is the premier league.

You cant learn a player on the job in the PL - it's too costly, as it has been already.

He should a) never have been bought in the first place, or b) sent out on loan to a Championship club to get his error-ridden game sorted out.
Looks like we're agreeing to disagree then Dave.

Unless you disagree to disagree, in which case I think we've reached an impasse

You can if the rest of the squad are settled and reliable I’d be happy him making mistakes and learning if we looked more stable and could score goals, as it is he’s added to the problems we already have.

This argument over a settled side being able to carry the youngsters mistakes doesn’t add up.

The older, senior pros make shedloads of mistakes, in many teams. We just need to back the young lads instead of ripping them to pieces.

I’d sooner see a young player, like Patterson and Branithwaite, learning the game, getting minutes and making mistakes (which I don’t think Patterson did against Fulham btw) than playing the senior players we know are busted flushes at this level.

With Coleman out who would you play there?

Holgate? Godfrey? No ta.

Young? That means Myko back in the team to be the whipping boy like Patterson has become - sound, let’s do that then.

What doesn’t add up a settled side not staring relegation in the face is a much better place for a lad not ready for premier league minutes who needs to hit the ground running. Hickey for instance although he’s got plenty of first team experience under his belt Rico Lewis, Levi colwill, Evan Ferguson, Curtis Jones, Harvey Elliot all younger or same age yes they’re all better but they wouldn’t of got the minutes they have if they wasn’t in settled teams and probably would of went on loan as some of them have. Let this sink in last 2 seasons he’s been first choice RB and is learning on the job no thanks.

So no player in the history of the PL has ever learnt on the job so to speak?

Hickey was a standout at Hearts and we could have had him for a million or so before he left for Italy. He'll be a fine PL player for the next decade.

That's how these teams like Brentford are outperforming us these days: they're recruitment is half ways decent whereas ours is pathetic.

No other club wanted Patterson before our idiots got rinsed for him.

Why did no one else in England buy Hickey if he was that good at Hearts?

Never mind England, Hickey was wanted by a club like Bayern Munich. He went to a Serie A club and acquitted himself very well. Brentford got themselves a bargain on the basis of that as they could see what he could do.

...by comparison we signed a player who had barely a handful of senior starts for an SPL club.

He's been here 18 months and learned the square root of f.a. as far as I can see.
He played 1277 minutes in the PL last season. That's the equivalent of just over 14 games. In a team that looked like a championship outfit, feeling sorry for themselves, leaking goals and not scoring. I don't know what is expected of him??

Our fans are mad. We stayed up and loads wanted to give them a lap of appreciation. Many of the "pros" failed to perform all season. Yet a kid, in his first games in the PL, in one of the worst sides, is being ripped apart for not performing miracles.

We deserve everything we get. Some of the fanbase think protesting is the problem. Some think fan faves can do no wrong. Others are ready to shoot down anyone that tries (regardless if they fail or struggle). It's a toxic fanbase and a toxic club. I genuinely wish I could walk away from it all.

19 appearances overall and I see only a pattern of compounding his positional frailties. He's been coached by Baines and Ashley Cole in the period he's been here, regardless of the number of games he's had.

If this lad does have anything to offer he'll need to show it very soon.
