You have to look at the coaching.

He's not covering himself in glory granted but he's 20 and he's got a ginger scotch egg coaching him.

Get rid of Dyche, get Coleman back in, get a decent manager and coaching set up to work with Patterson behind the scenes.

Don't right him off yet. It's hard for any one to look good in this current system/set up - if you can call it that.

Awful last night.

Relies on having a good CB and CDM to cover him when he gets forward, which he hasn't had yet this season.

He's been coached by Ashley Cole and Leighton Baines mate....Maybe wait until Maldini's been here to finally recognise the lad has zero aptitude for playing?

The same can be said of a handful of players, and I wonder how much of this is partly down to confidence and coping with pressure when they make a mistake.

…I get the ‘lack of confidence’ shouts but he’s actually displaying very little quality. There are no ‘signs’. He struggles to cut out crosses from his flank, the opposition get past him too easily, he’s often caught out of position and he’s offering nothing in the top third. These are basics.

I was one of his biggest supporters when he signed but i have to accept he’s been a major disappointment and it’s difficult to excuse him anymore.

....not sure what point your making. All full backs rely on good cover when they attack. Patterson offers very little in all aspects of his game, it’s nothing to do with lack of cover.

I disagree. I think he offers a lot going forward but, as with all attacking full-backs, can be exposed if you attack on the transition

And don't tell me there is no evidence of his attacking ability this year because if you can find any Everton player who has looked accomplished in the final third I'll buy you a beer

Just because they've been good players ala Frank Lampard, doesn't mean they automatically make good coaches.

There's a player in Patterson, who's better than what he's currently showing, he's 20, so it's an important time in his development, unfortunately for him and us, it's under the current regime.

Close thread - the evertonian das have spoken - the lad will never make it and shouldn’t be playing for any prem team.

Sooooooooooo boring.

Young player gonna make mistakes shock - let’s get behind him and the rest instead of this.

We could have pulled any random full backs from the Championship for £2 million and have better options than these 2.

He's actually 21 and turns 22 in October. There's still time for him to develop, but he's also a full international for Scotland and should be starting to show signs of becoming more consistent at least.

…I’d love to agree with you as the indication was that he would be an ‘attacking full-back’ but I’ve seen very little quality in the top third in all his time here. Not sure how many assists he has to his name. One decent cross last weekend was noticeable because of its rarity. Last season I actually thought he was more of a defender (he had a particularly good game at Leeds).

I’m clearly missing something.

I think he has good technique, a good first touch and is a good carrier of the ball, and takes up plenty of promising positions. But that's my opinion. Will often, if given the license, get in behind the full back and the left centre half. End product hasn't been there but is typical of many young players, think (hope) that will come.

I also happen to think he is a fine one-on-one defender, also recall him pocketing Mitoma when we played Brighton last year.

He is underperforming, but then who can't you accuse of that in this Everton side over the last 12 months? The kid is still young and has had to learn his trade in a god awful Everton side, fighting relegation and playing second fiddle to the beloved club captain whose legs don't work anymore

Wouldn't wish that on most people
