2023/24 Nathan Patterson

I think he's been poor this season tbh, doesnt help having Garner to help nor the shape/system Dyche has them playing.
But for every mistake he makes in a game ill show you two Gueye has made both before he left us and since he came back. And I'm a Gana fan.
We've been a bog standard team for the past 3 years and our defenders, including Pickford, make mistakes every game, its one of the reasons we've been in successive relegation battles and on course for another.
But, for some reason, this kid gets slated for every one he makes and never a word of praise when he does well.
The Young example is spot on, thought he was poor again today, especially in possession, and his decision making for a guy that has played over 20 years at the top level has been terrible, yet we won't see much flak being thrown his way, even though he's on twice the wage at least of Patterson.
If we're going to criticise at least be consistent.

I thought Young and Patterson were both poor.

Hopefully that assist gives him some confidence to kick on.

When Harrison/McNeill are fit I think he has to put Garner in at right back. Patterson just doesn’t look ready - whether he will ever be is another debate.

I know what you're saying and I know Dyche likes to defend narrow. But for a full back to come charging inside effectively causing him and the centre back to cross over, with the centre back then struggling to get across in time is nonsensical. If he stands his ground with the back four still holding it's shape the chances are the man on the ball just gets fronted up easily and probably turns back or goes wide. I'm not sure that's the managers tactics.
Looking at the highlights, and it shows very little of the build up for Sheffields 2nd goal, but Patterson moves forward to prevent the Sheffield player from bringing the ball down and turning unchallenged. I’ve no idea why Patterson is there and not Tarkowski. And I’ve no idea why none of the Everton midfield is within 30 yards of the Everton defence. I’m assuming it’s some sort of counter-attack in which Everton have been caught out of formation. Otherwise you’d expect Tarkowski to be where Patterson was and Patterson to be tracking Archer.

Tarko has been a bit underwhelming to be fair.

Was at the game today and Patterson didn't do much wrong. Garner didn't look to track back much and left him with 2v1s if United had switched play (see the 2nd goal).

The midfield don't do enough cover. If Garner has been told to stay high, Onana/Gana should cover. Their first goal for example is Oanan being lazy to stop the cross. If thats happening on both flanks...it doesn't paint either fullback in glory.

I was thinking that it is maybe Tarkowski’s pace that was the issue, he’s stayed too deep because he’s worried about being outpaced?

United had a good game plan (out of Luton and Burnley they look the only team that will compete but will struggle to score goals IMO), win the ball, play long to McBurnie and Archer (who gave Tarko a tough time) or the channels.

McBurnie and Archer stuck close to Branthwaite and Tarko so Young or Patterson had to tuck in for cover.

The issue i saw were zero cover on either flanks from Garner or Danjuma so they'd be left with a spare man or 2v1s. So if they won a duel or got a flick on our wide, it would end up 3v3 - the first goal came from that. Midfield not covering the wing because the fullback tucked in to cover the CBs who were pinned by the 2 up top.

Great assist which I think is papering over what wasn't the best performance. With how weak we are at left back I really hope he can kick on this season. Not seeing it yet though.

Yes it’s been noticed that there is often a massive gap between the Everton midfield and defence, when out of possession. The midfield presses the opposition high but the defence doesn’t squeeze up behind them, leaving a space of 20-30 yards between them with sometimes only Gana in there. Is this happening because of lack of pace at the back? It’s the only reason I can think of. And out of the back 4, who lacks pace? Is it Tarkowski?

I'm not sure it's a pace thing when Keane isn't playing. Today United played a 352 so the front 2 sat on out CBs which always means your fullbacks provide cover.

When that happens, you wingers or midfielders need to drop and cover the wing backs. That didn't happen much today.

Theres also the arguement Dyche wants them to cross into the box because we're awful at closing them down.
