That 5 or 6 year period in the 80’s, I swear I’ve still not seen a keeper with better reflexes as him, even today. World class and that needed underlining.

Remember seeing him play for Winsford United against Stalybridge Celtic at Bower Fold...probably around 1980. An old Celtic fan who was rather weird called Wilf put a large carrot in the back of Nev’s nets.

The sit-in bothered me more than the transfer request, especially that he hadn’t exactly covered himself in glory in that first half vs Leeds anyway. But within a few weeks, it was all history and we all loved him again…and he went on to still have some excellent years with us- and a further winners medal- to stand out as our most successful ever player.
