PLUS - I'm sure this common knowledge but ANY transfer fee is paid in installments. Ergo a fee £8m would never be a cheque for £8m today; more like £2m now, then a bit more every few months. if the player is then sold the liability passes from club to club. Quite frequent for clubs to take on repayments to players' former clubs. This was part of the Demba Ba deal, the liability to Hoffenheim passed from West Ham so they can clear an outstanding debt of their books.
