Phil Neville - your thoughts now?

Was a very good defensive central midfielder for a couple of years, far better than that absolute joke called Fellaini that half of you were creaming over for years. His small time comments towards the end of his career seriously pished me off, but I hear a lot of very similar stuff from other Evertonians and the media, to be honest.

Bit silly.

Fellaini could have both his legs amputated and I'd still rather see him ahead of pointer boy

Straight back at you mate, anyone who thinks Fellaini is a good defensive central midfielder doesn't have a clue about football. His ability to read play was crap and he couldn't track a runner to save his life. That's why the likes of Tom Cleverly were picked ahead of him at Man United, and it's why Fellaini will eventually be sold to the likes of Newcastle or West Ham for about 15 million, where he will be stuck upfront, as that is where he is effective.

I've had this discussion too many times to remember mate, those who know what they are talking about will back up what I say, those who are blinded by his boss perm will continue to describe him as the white Patrick Viera, despite the fact that he can't get a game for love nor money at Man United.

Before Neville was finished, he was good at protecting his/our defence. Unfortunately there are no statistics that relate to reading the game or tracking runners, which is a shame as it is one of the most fundamental parts of midfield play, far more important than the number of touches a player has during a game, or how much ground a player covers during a game.

my god

this is like the teachings from mount sinai levels of utter utter tosh

Improved the team when he first arrived from Utd, prob stayed a bit too long and became the Boo Boys target like Osman is now, really don't get the hatred. No wonder we get called bitter, some of the posts here are ridiculous.

He doesnt have to patrick viera to be bettet than neville, and there are plenty of stats to suggest what an effective dm is, such as ball retention which is important in that position, intrceptions, which fellaini topped the entire league for from dm, tackles won, airial duel, team goals conceded, granted you have to still have an eye for the unseen work, but neville better than felli, thats right up there with some of the most outlandish stuff i've on here, and this is GOT, so the competition is very stiff

As I said, I've been through this before on here on god knows how many occasions. I can't really be arsed going over it again. Perhaps you could go on a Man United forum instead, and ask them who they think was a better midfielder from a defensive perspective? You would end up seeing them pick Neville time after time, the Neville who actually used to be selected in Man United's greatest squad of all time, rather than the beaut with a perm who can't track a runner to save his life, who does not adequately protect his defence, and the one who can't get a game for United in one of their weakest squads in years.

Touching the ball and covering ground is great, but you simply are not a good defensive midfielder if you can't track runners to save your life. Which is why the likes of Cleverly and other average midfielders were chosen ahead of Fellaini at United. It's why I think Roberto Martinez would choose the likes of Tom Cleverly over Fellaini all day long. It's why Neville has about six Premier League winners medal whilst performing within the greatest ever Man United squad, and why Fellaini can't get a game for them.

Oh yeah, have you got a link to this stat? Or have you just made it up?

Except it isn't. Go on a United forum and see what they say? You have just been blinded by his impressive perm and his ability to score goals, cause havoc in attacking areas, and be a good route out of dangerous defensive positions. He was cack at protecting his defence, and it's why he can't get a game at United, and it's why he will be sold for about 15 million to a team that will play him as a forward.

What makes United fans more knowledgeable?

What makes Evertonians more knowledgeable? I refer to the manc's opinions because I don't think they have been blinded by an impressive perm and 12 goals a season from the second striker position. I refer to the manc's opinions because it seems to be totally at odds with people on here, and because they are a club who have also seen both players play in both positions for both clubs. They think he is diabolical from a defensive perspective, and I am afraid that they are correct.

Bit embarrassing bringing nevilles medal collection up, he didnt win any at everton so they are nil nil in that score

It isn't remotely embarrassing. Neville actually got a game for United in probably their strongest ever squad, Fellaini can't get a game in their weakest squad for over 20 years.

Fellaini will be sacked off by United (without having made any impact at all) to a third rate club that will deploy him as a forward, vault me.

Neville was a big character behind the scenes and was a massive part of the positive scene that Moyes fostered while at Everton. He(Neville) defo did more god for our club than bad. I think he get's far too much grief from us tbh.
