Phil Neville - your thoughts now?

Are you deliberately ignoring the fact that none of those stats are capable of documenting a player's ability to read the game well enough to track runners?

Do you acknowledge that reading the game and tracking runners is pretty important and a rather fundamental part of being a proficient defensive midfielder?

Do you acknowledge that people would be forgiven for thinking Fellaini was a better midfielder than Gareth Barry based on your little table? Which lets face it, is absolute nonsense in the extreme. Barry was lauded in a title winning Manchester City side, whilst Fellaini struggles to get into the poorest Man United side in years.

You aren't going to change your opinion, and neither am I, and I'm happy with that. But please don't try and convince yourself that your little table provides unequivocal proof that supports your opinion, because it just doesn't, whether you like it or not.
It does provide some proof though as it lists skills that are vital to a top cm, barry also fared well, better in fact in some aspects than felli in areas he is commenly thought to be better at. At the time felli was playing in a good everton team, his performances made him the highest paid player at the club, his manager stated he is tje best player of his type in the league, fans at the club were raving about him, he was a regular in a strong international team. I have no problem saying he was playing as well as barry, who is a good cm and does track runners better than felli, but that doesnt make neville better at it, he was so often a weak point and that area constantly exploited when he played there, there isnt anything other than arse kissing that neville is better at, im not sure what red cafes opinion is on these things but i will be sure to check, so i can be informed by the biggest group of blerts othrr than rawk on the planet, then revise my opinion

No matter how many stats say the opposite always refer to red cafe before casting an opinion. Passes made, interceptions, airial duels won, tackles won, assits, moves started, all meaningless when judging a cm if red cafe disagrees

You might want to study your little table in a bit more detail as well. He has the worst passing statistics of the lot of them, and there is no mention of assists or 'starting moves', neither of which are a fundamental part of defensive proficiency anyway.

In fact he has the worst passing percentage, despite making the second lowest amount of successful passes, and he is miles behind the amount of successful passes made by Barry, Parker and Song.

Straight back at you mate, anyone who thinks Fellaini is a good defensive central midfielder doesn't have a clue about football. His ability to read play was crap and he couldn't track a runner to save his life. That's why the likes of Tom Cleverly were picked ahead of him at Man United, and it's why Fellaini will eventually be sold to the likes of Newcastle or West Ham for about 15 million, where he will be stuck upfront, as that is where he is effective.

I've had this discussion too many times to remember mate, those who know what they are talking about will back up what I say, those who are blinded by his boss perm will continue to describe him as the white Patrick Viera, despite the fact that he can't get a game for love nor money at Man United.

Before Neville was finished, he was good at protecting his/our defence. Unfortunately there are no statistics that relate to reading the game or tracking runners, which is a shame as it is one of the most fundamental parts of midfield play, far more important than the number of touches a player has during a game, or how much ground a player covers during a game.

Fellaini ain't a central midfielder

he epitomises Moyes football. ugly brutal, but efficient. Gets in your face, gets goals. Dirty as sin.

Still can't believe he was bought as a destroyer in central midfield next to Carrick, remember watching him against Bayern running diagonally like a bloody bishop

LOL

I am not one bit arsed what a bunch of whoppers on red cafe say, I'll judge Felli from his time at Everton. He was great for us. In 2012 his stats as a DM were among the best in the league.

Basically you couldn't be more wrong.

Yep.

Fellaini could have both his legs amputated and I'd still rather see him ahead of pointer boy

Smackdown

Indeed.

Haters gonna hate.

Just laughing at any suggestion Neville was a better midfielder than Fellaini. There's revisionism, and then there's just willful stupidity.

As a defensive midfielder. Do you not think it is strange the way Neville played a considerable role in United's greatest ever squad, but Fellaini seldom gets a game for them? Nobody, including Moyes, was interested in him at his release clause. He was the very definition of a panic buy, and he has absolutely bombed at Man United. He will end up being sold to a third rate team who play him in his proper position, as a forward.

Just look at him protecting his defence. A white Patrick Viera I say. Real Madrid are after him:

That's the Phil Neville who made 386 appearances within Man United's finest ever squad, the Phil Neville who has won six league championships.

And Fellaini, who erm, erm?

Earned a £28m transfer, was our player of the year and is one of the key players for Belgium.

Fellaini is twice the player of Neville. Even as a destructive defensive midfielder. Two GIFs of mistakes for United where he has not been the same player doesn't make that less of a fact.
