The point is there were different types of pressures from before the lucrative Sky deal came in compared the period after.

Kenwright was operating hand to mouth. I mean if it wasn't for the Rooney sale we may have gone into administration! Moyes was able to work effectively with these tight budgets and as such finish each season respectfully placed. It was demonstrated by some journalists quite a few times over that period how we successfully operated a good few places above the average wage of the team. On the whole, we commanded respect. There is a reason Moyes was selected to manage UTD. The caveat here is that we never bloody won anything! It was said he was too defence-minded and lacked the courage to achieve anything better. Also, I know a lot of blues on here deride him for fostering a 'small-time club' phenomenon. This they argue helped him to manage the fans expectations.

And that's the rub right there folks....

FANS EXPECTATION - It's huge

Since we've spent a bit fans have become entitled. The fact we are worse off creates so much anger and disillusionment it has become toxic. There is so much pressure on the club now to improve and that has to be the right thing. Ordinary players command such vulgar wage packets now it's no wonder we expect them to be amazing. My only hope is Ancelotti is not just thinking about his enormous wages and that he cares about this project. It's early days but we've just gotta try and be patient and get behind him.

We don't have much choice.

We have simply made mistakes also, trying to sign proven premier league quality i.e. bolasie Williams, gylfi, instead of having a coach who was addressing where we was lacking and improving that position

Like Pep and Klopp have

Pep needed a LB signed Mendy
Needed CB signed Laporte

Klopp need CB signed van dijk
Need Lb signed Andy Robertson
CM Fabinho

Signings with structure

Bit meaningless without context. Total and average spend by other clubs and relative positions over same periods etc
Why so negative? I was simply showing how football has changed for Everton. This may interest some fans, I dunno! I thought it may encourage some cool debate. Have you got anything you'd like to contribute?

i was just rtying to demonstrate how we now operate with reckless abandon when buying ordinary players for huge sums over and over again. When we were poor it wasn't like that, was it? Sure there were a few crap signings along the way but we mostly balanced the books didn't we? Everton was smart in the transfer market cos we had to be. improving players then selling them on for massive profits was commonplace. That was my personal context. I left it open for interpretation for others to discuss.

Great post. I would like to add though that these top tier teams you describe can afford to prioritise one position at a time because they know they will eventually get the right player. Put it like this, if Man City identifies three players for left-back you can be assured one of them will want to sign for them.

We don't have that luxury because we have found it very difficult to convince top players to consider us. Therefore, to our detriment, we have spread our net wider to sign anyone who is available, especially if they have underperformed at the club they are playing at.

Have you got any statistics on exactly how much the fans were to blame for our horrible team, managers and league positions in those years?
Yes, I have Mr. Cynic. They took me many hours to formulate. They are available in my useless Everton statistics webshop and you can have them for an introductory price of just 20 squid! Now, remember by buying you are helping me to create this exclusive content for all you blues intelligentsia out there.

Here's a free snippet. It's less than 100% but more than 1%.

Cheers

No pie charts or interesting Damon-esque multicoloured fonts.

It's a hard pass from me.

His major money signings were hit and miss: Kroldrop, Beattie, Bilyaletdinov - trash; Johnson (good early on, went off the boil badly), Fellaini the pick of his big cash signings.
Not sure that Beattie was quite in the 'trash' category, but certainly not a success. Bily - wouldn't argue with 'trash', overall. Koldrup was definitely a tragi-comic signing, though.
