We weren't challenging for top 4 under Moyes though, so it's a false dilemma. We 'came close' this season but ended up 9 points adrift all said and done, and that's the closest we've been in the past four seasons.

Probably you mate, however weren't most on here keen to see Moyes go, and now everyones panicing that no-one will get us top 6 other than the great 'unknown by most 2 weeks ago but with the sexy name and a white stallion'? I'm sure the reciprocal argument that team Vitor followers will play the get out of jail free card by saying "if we'd signed him we'd b Champions League-bound".....its all the same argument mate.

I didn't want to see Moyes go, so you can't count me in as one of those :) I haven't liked some of the things that have come out since he's decided to go, or the way he ran his contract down, but I certainly didn't want to see him go.

Didn't say that, just said he can make mistakes. Ferguson has never had to appoint a successor. His career doesn't automatically make him an incredible headhunter of managers and it's silly to make that link and proclaim Moyes as a legend before he starts the job.

Who's proclaimed he's a legend?

I've just stated the fact that he was appointed off the say so of a legend, & not as Steve tried to suggest - the view of an accountant.

His detractors are embarrassed by his appointment as the manager of the countries biggest club, as it makes a mockery of their judgement. If he goes on to die on his arse, the they can re-gain some face, but I doubt that will happen personally, time will tell - but as it stands, the man who was decried by a %age of Blues, has got the gig.

As opposed to the magical 6th or 7th placed trophy under Moyes ?

Much of a muchness if we can actually win something under Martinez.

I do love this 6/7th place trophy nonsense. You want to finish as high up the league as you can. Moving down the league, trophy or not is not acceptable. We should be aiming to improve, not regress.

It's not a false dilemma, if we weren't challenging for top four then I'm not sure what you'd define as challenging for top four as being? We spent the first half of the year in the top 4, and the second half just off the pace. It only ran away from us in the final part of the season.

Finishing 5th a few times is pretty close too....... or maybe you've got the league upside down and you think everyone in the top 3 are challenging for the 4th spot?

Bang on Brunnun.

martinez has alot of options if everton dont take him on, for example theres a job at stoke available atm, malaga will need one too if pellegrini leaves etc.

The Fiorentina season we could have done it and we did do it in 2004-05.

But other than that, not really. This year we would have had to have won something like eleven games in a row to make it, it was never realistic.

Whereas I agree that I think he will be a success, the "then you'll see, you'll all see" stand point doesn't help you out.

Sure.

It's definitly a divide. And it's one that can't really be breached by argument, you either value trophies over top 4 or you don't.

I don't think it's a question of ambition, just how you look at the game.

Top 4 proves you are one of the top 4 sides/managers in the league. Cups prove nothing, other than you are OK, and probably had a bit of luck along the way. Still, would love a cup!

You obviously don't know anything about Malaga lad if you think it's a bigger job than ours.

I think Everton are a huge club mate. Thats why I'm gutted we have lowered ourselves to potentially appointing a manager who has been relegated two weeks earlier, on the basis that we could never attract anybody else.

I agree with you regarding Malaga, historically not as big a club as Everton, and not as much potential. However, a side who was within 2 minutes of the champions league Semi Final would be considered a step up.

We came close to top four last season so we have to build on that and be within a top 4 shout going it to the last day of the season, a familiar quote next May should be "if Everton lose today they will be guaranteed 5th place and playing Europa League football" that should be our aim next season I think.
