Running

Sounds to me like tendinitus mate.

Have a look at the symptoms and see what you think ?

I developed mild hamstring pain doing hill sprints, as part of training for a marathon in 2020.

I didn`t rest it, as I didn`t want to compromise my training plan and it eventually turned into tendinitus, which I`ve had ever since.

The symptoms you describe there, almost mirror mine.

It doesn`t stop me from running, as it`s just a dull ache more than anything and I`ve learnt to live with it.

The only cure I can see, is to stop running until it`s gone, which I`m never going to do lol
It’s worth trying some of the rehab exercises recommended for Upper(Proximal) hamstring tendinopathy in conjunction with your running. ie do rehab on non running days. They target strengthening the hamstring/ glutes , if it is that they can help prevent the issue reoccurring.

It does leave me wondering if I can go under 19minutes. Need to up the mileage steadily to get ready for the summer season, balancing that with achilles pain.
I'm going to try and get to park run this weekend. I thought I was enjoying my running again as I ran 5 times in 10 days over Christmas.
But I've only run 3 times in January. I'm so frustrated as I got so fit running 3 times a week a couple of years a go but now I just can't get out of bed at weekends.
I feel absolutely brilliant when I've done a run as well. I just can't work out why I'm struggling.
Go for the 19 minutes ASAP. Especially if your on form at the moment.

About to go out in the dark now, (it can be anytime 4-6am, depends on when I wake) for me it's a case of getting it done and out the way. Often don't feel like doing it, and January will always be a bind. Hopefully the park run will spark it back up for you

Kelvin Kiptum and coach died in a car accident today :( RIP. Would have broken 2hrs this year.
Very sad news , it seems he only did 3 marathons , or at least they’re the ones being quoted , and smashed them each time. As is often the case with marathons , I was actually in the same race as him at London last year, never saw him of course and he was 2 1/2 hours ahead of me.

10 years ago Kiptum is in the Diamond League and (assuming he's also all that at those distances) would be targeting a 5K and 10K double in the Olympics.

The marathon was always the post prime/retirement home for the track elites. However the sponsorship money + prize money is in the marathon now. The courses in the big races are all similar and designed to be as track like as possible. Plus the shoes are so good its less a race of survival/endurance and more of a track meet for them. The odds that you'll get injured training/racing and/or DNF'ing are significantly lower these days.

He was the 1st of the new breed of runners going straight to the 26.2 distance that you'll see in the next decade. IMO you'll have multiple sub 1:59 runners by 2032. Just a shame he won't be the 1st to go break 2.

I’ve retired three pairs of trail shoes this winter, due to them falling to bits with the mud and the wet lol
Currently looking for some trail shoes, ideally a hybrid I can use on road too, any suggestions?
I bought some Scarpa before Xmas, and I've had achilles pain on one side, so staying away from them. Just not sure about this heel to toe drop stuff and if that could be impacting it. I've been a road runner all my life, but much prefer being off road now, with a few Lakeland trail runs lined up this year.

Hoka Challenger are the ones mate .
Their the trail version of the Clifton’s.

They’re perfect for things like grass, forest trails and you can use them on the road too.

Their next to useless on heavy ground, but they’re not designed for use when the grounds like that.

They take a bit of getting used to, with them being so cushioned, but once you’re used to them, it’s like wearing pillows on your feet !

I always have at least one pair on the go.

As always with Hoka, always go at least half a size up.
