Running

Third race of the year yesterday - Whinlatter Forest Trail Half Marathon.

Possibly one of the most scenic I’ve done, with stunning views of the surrounding fells and the forest was just off the scale beautiful too.

Started off with over a mile of steep gradient too, which had my nicely cemented near to the back of the race for the duration .😂

Thought you'd appreciate this...my kinda' thing, can easily relate. Crazy what you can find/see out here, items and views all their own.

I'm doing the Garmin training to speed up your 5k times. I don't quite understand the logic in it getting me to run 15k in order to be faster over 5k. Am I missing something?

The long slow runs build up your stamina / endurance and improve your overall fitness without you having to hammer your body like you would in an interval session.

It’s typical to have balance - easy runs, long runs, intervals, hill runs, etc

I’ve been reading about something called “ fast packing “

It’s a combination of distance trail running and camping, where you carry lightweight camping gear, food, drink etc.

The people who do it, look pretty mad tbh and must’ve have no problems with stinking to high heaven 😂

in addition to the slow runs linked above (I disagree with "slow runs" name but it's generally ok), a few (maybe) helpful ideas:

the best way to get better at running is by running
most running outcomes are endurance related, not speed related
running volume is one of the simplest/most effective determinants of endurance

The difficulty with slow runs I’ve found, is it doesn’t feel natural running that slowly and you subconsciously speed up.

It takes real discipline to do them properly.

I've never understood "slow running" but if they mean easy running then I'm all behind this. but a lot of people take their easy runs way too fast, so some people may actually need to "slow down."

Had two 5k and one 6.5k runs the first week of my training and struggled.

Week 2 i was a slob and did nothing after the effects of a heavy night on the drink.

Now into week 3 and i have two 7k runs and going out for a bigger run tommorrow aiming for 8/9k.

16 weeks out from the half marathon.

Slow incremental increases and you’ll be fine 👍

I'm after some new running shoes. Have always got on well with Brooks (defyance) and Saucony (guides) but fancy a change. They were sold to me on the basis they're neutral but with good support.

Looking at asics Novablast - does anyone have any experience of asics and whether they come up true to size?

Any other recommendations welcome

I’ve got a pair of altra paradigm for daily running - done 400km in them so far and they look pretty new

They’re not for for everyone - zero drop and wide toe box

Helps me with my dodgy knees as the zero drop puts more emphasis on the calves and Achilles (that’s what the blurb says anyway)

Fourth race of the year yesterday- Kettlewell Trail Half Marathon - turned out to be nearly 14.5 miles !

I’ve done stuff on the likes of Snowdon before, but I’ve never tackled elevation as steep as this before and coming down on the side was just nuts 😂

I was glad to just finish.

A truly stunning course though, with sweeping panoramic views of the North Yorkshire Dales.
