Running

Fourth race of the year yesterday- Kettlewell Trail Half Marathon - turned out to be nearly 14.5 miles !

I’ve done stuff on the likes of Snowdon before, but I’ve never tackled elevation as steep as this before and coming down on the side was just nuts 😂

I was glad to just finish.

A truly stunning course though, with sweeping panoramic views of the North Yorkshire Dales.
That elevation would match my heart rate.
Well done for completing.
I Need to get myself north more for trails.

That said did a half marathon trail run around Sandringham estate earlier today, felt tough for me.
Doesn't bode well for Ambleside next month

What distance Ambleside are you doing ?

The 23k race, under no illusions it'll be a more than a challenge. After today I know I'll be taking it steady, just to complete it.
Any insights into the terrain/inclines greatly appreciated. Wore the hoka challengers today, will these be suitable

First things first.

Get there handy, as the parking for the event is tricky. Ambleside is a one way and not great for traffic at the best of times, so he prepared for the event car park to be potentially full and having to park elsewhere and have a bit of a walk - happened to me last time.

It’s not a half marathon, it’s just over fifteen miles and it’s the closest Lakeland Trails do to a fell run, as a lot of it is on steep moorland paths at the back of Ambleside.

The first big climbs come pretty early on, virtually everyone walks up them.

If I was you, I’d start to near the back and get comfortable with your pace and then work your way through the pack if you want to.

It’s always very sociable at the back too.

If it’s been dry beforehand your Challengers will be fine, if it’s been raining a lot the week before, I’d go for something a bit more chunky, if you’ve got any.

It’s a great day, but also a challenging one, due to the climbs and also the distance, so be prepared for spending at least three hours plus on your feet 👍

Ps where are you staying ?

The reason I ask, is that Ambleside gets very busy and it can be difficult to get a place to eat if you haven’t booked, same with the nearby Coniston.

Camping down the rd, Rydal, about a mile outside Ambleside.
Got booked in for Friday night, Saturday we're just going to see what's on offer after the event and plod into the town as soon as possible for early meal. Mainly to get on the ale really

I know the site, pretty sure you’ll run past it, as the tale end of the run takes you past Rydal Water.

Yes did notice that. Rydal hall, be a good cool down to there afterwards, failing that there's a bus stop outside :). Have you entered, or any other blues doing this? Think there's only a few entries left in the shorter distance

I’m doing the 14k this year, as I’m doing it with my mate who’s not a runner, but has trained himself up to jog / walk the distance.

It’s more of a weekend away really, as we’re staying in Coniston and both want to see the newly restored Bluebird in the museum there.

Been back running (of sorts) over the last 2 weeks. I’m recovering from a bad back and sciatica anyway and haven’t run for a long time. My first mistake was going straight for a 5 mile run, I suffered with awful back pain for 4 or 5 days afterward, after chatting with my physio I have taken on board his advice and currently am limiting my runs to 1-1.5 miles at a time at slow pace, I have a weakness on my left hand side so am currently trying to strengthen the muscle that side and by running any further it’s damaging the muscle ….. it’s very boring only doing a mile or so at at a time but it will be worth it in the end once the time for progression kicks in.

Maybe cushion the fact that you`re only running a mile at a time, by going onto the beautiful coastal path / heath by you ?

That’s where I do most of running these days, I try to stay off the roads and actually prefer trail running.

Today’s run is actually on the mountain/hill…. I power walk from home to the top and then have a gentle run down the other side and back home. The power walk is great as it loosens up a lot of the stiffness (ahem) I currently suffer from.

Better for your joints and core, as you`re running on softer ground, that`s not flat, plus you work harder too.

The reality is that you`re starting from scratch mate, so I`d just go month to month, adding a little bit on every month, as the pain settles down and you start to get fitter.

Yep…. It’s starting right from the beginning all over again and monitoring how it goes. There’s a strong possibility I will need to stop altogether if nothing improves and I’ll have to concentrate on walking and biking instead 😂😂. I actually took my kayak out on llanberis lake last week and that was a great workout with no after pain
