"sixth, seventh or eighth the best Everton can do"

This is just Moyes' way of covering his tracks when he leaves the club after 11 years of no silverware. He'll keep his integrity, and go to another club that can line his pockets.

Unfortunately it's also painfully true.

Given our lack of financial muscle it is fair to say that most seasons under Moyes we have 'over achieved' in comparison to others.

I don't believe we would do that much better with Moyes in charge even if we had a big budget. No amount of money can change a mentality, and Moyes will always err on the side of caution.

I read that as "analysts reckon we can't do better than we've been doing, we're gonna try and do better in the cup and finish higher"

Arsenal are away at Spurs next and we're at home to Reading who have lost 5 of their last 6 away games, so we could close the gap back to 2 points. We then play the Gunners at the Emirates the following week. I know it's unlikely, but we could overtake them with a win.

We have a much harder run in than Wenger's team though. They'll only have three more top 10 sides left to play and only one of them are likely to finish above them in the league.

Liverpool could be the biggest threat for 6th. Their biggest remaining games (Spurs, Chelsea and Everton) are all at Anfield, whereas we have to go away to The Emirates, White Hart Lane, Anfield and Stamford Bridge as well as hosting City. Hopefully we can raise our game and keep picking up points.

When Mancini said last year that City had no chance of winning the league with 6 games to go and they were 8 points behind but ended up winning it, people said it was a masterstroke by him because it took the pressure off the players.Maybe its a bit of that. Its not what the fanswant to hear though as it does come across quite negative.

This has been in the back of my mind, although we now have 2 teams to catch up on

We have no hope of matching United or City. Chelsea and Spurs both have some wonderful players but each owe a huge debt to one individual (Lampard and Bale respectively). If, as expected, they move on in the summer, it might help us to get closer next year. Arsenal have some fantastic forwards but are vulnerable defensively. We're not too far away from them but they have a couple of special players, especially Santi Cazorla. Sixth is probably about where we deserve to be. It's possible that those ahead of us could falter and we could perhaps squeeze a bit more out of what we've got, but the biggest danger might be West Brom, Liverpool, Newcastle, Swansea etc getting closer to us.

Behind the scenes, he instilled a winning mentality.

Moyes says it, he means it

What would be interesting is to understand why he thinks that. Whether it's a lack of quality in the side, a lack of depth. Once you understand why you're not producing you can do something about it.

Of course it's quite possible he's saying all of those things, just not in public, but I really hope he's not portraying this kind of negative attitude to the players in private.

Obviously having money can make things much easier, but we clearly don't have that, so have to make up where we can instead.

To use the marginal gains stuff from British Cycling, can our coaches improve our players technically by a few percent? What about their fitness? Maybe tactically we can get better, or do better at producing young players good enough for the first team.

Those things tend to be operational rather than financial. If the back office people did the same, then we might generate a bit more cash to spend on new players as well.

Teams who have finished above Everton since 2006-7.

Manchester United x 6
Arsenal x 6
Chelsea x 6
Liverpool x 4
Tottenham x 4
Manchester City x 3
Aston Villa x 1
Newcastle x 1

Which of those teams should we have finished above?

Perhaps Newcastle last season.

One team in 6 years.

We have two strikers - one who is out of form and one who is injury prone.

Our rivals have at least 3 and can spend £10m in a blink of an eye to get another in if they need it.

Liverpool have spent £75m on 4 strikers in the last 3 years.
