The 2024 AFL Season Thread

Its not Mackie. Its Stephen Wells. The guy is apparently a recruiting guru. Mackie has not been there that long really.
He's a brother of former Carlton premiership winning player Greg Wells i think. Anyway i'm just looking forward to Friday now.

It sure would be nice to bring the reigning premiers down a peg or two.:D

Yeo is out out of contract end of this season, apparently chasing an improved contract.
It would be pure Geelong, to land him at a reduced contract and he'll play the next 3 seasons injury free.

I thought Mackie was responsible for the list over the last few years. Anyway, whoever it is, the Hawks need to poach him 😂
Last couple of years with Wells in the background. There were rumours around that Mackie was upsetting other recruiters with the way he does things and other clubs were not wanting to deal with him. I even at one point saw talk of him being replaced but I think thats died down at the moment.

Mackie was a smart arse as a player and I'm sure he's similar as a recruiter.

A very disappointing defeat indeed. Oh well hopefully the Blues respond against Melbourne and the Swans next.

Congratulations anyway! This was an opportunity for the Blues to make a statement of intent here.

Unfortunately though we crapped the bed big time. My fears going into this one were indeed very much proven to be correct!

Is Carlton in danger of becoming the Tottenham of the AFL?
I should hope not, we haven't qualified for and lost enough grand finals over the last thirty years for a start!

Compare to that Spurs who seem to always flatter to deceive when they reach a major final.

Hopefully things will improve when the injured players come back, but we don't look like a top four side at the current moment in time.

Our style of footy lacks a bit of finesse and polish at times as well imo.

That comparison is a bit low brow on my part & tongue in cheek. Carlton have a long & proud history of winning flags, Spuds on the other hand win nowt when it comes to titles.

I can't help but feel though that Carlton have a window of opportunity & they need to step up. They've got some good players but can they match it with the current elite teams? I get the feeling they are still not quite there. Next season will be 30yrs since the last premiership.

Yay! The Hawks win their second game of the season.

If I'm a Footscray fan I'm punching walls toward the end of the match. Ugle-Hagan marks the ball around 45m out, no angle. He hits the point post. Out on the full, no score. They guy is a specialist forward. Jason Dunstall must roll around laughing.

I don't know if I'm just getting older & forgetful, but so many players today seem to struggle with set shots. I can't remember 30 - 40 yrs ago the level of incompetency that seems to exist today. I know the game has changed, but full-forwards capable of 100 goals in a season are well & truly extinct. What is the deal with slight angle & kicking around the corner? I get it if they are on a really tight angle but honestly, can they not kick straight at all.

That Ugle-Hagan miss will turn the heat up unbearably for Bevo. Was insane to see the difference in the last qtr when Bont was on and off the ground. Libba just been rubbed out indefinitely due to a second concussion in recent weeks, poor [Poor language removed] hope he's ok.

I really hope Carlton can turn it around against Melbourne, but I think injuries are having too much of an impact atm. This type of slump happened last season as well, a loss to Melbourne most likely kicks us out of the 8, and 3 wins from the top 4, couple that with a loss to Sydney, it's going to require a second half similar to last year.
