I've never joined in with the slaughtering of Crawley and made he performed. Ever since he hit a attacking 70 odd in oz while we were getting pumped I thought he had the stones to play test cricket. Sorted out a few technical flaws and kicked on under the right management.Definitely not fanboying, just want someone who can catch the cricket ball, the runs he's scored aren't making up for the catches dropped and only 1 innings made a difference to a match. I'd have taken Bairstow ahead of Crawley at the beginning of the series.
It was a good series but one that England let get away by both poor decision making (idiotic declaration) and poor fielding. The weather in Manchester didn't help things but it is what it is, swings and roundabouts. But I didn't think it was much more entertaining than the last home Ashes series imo. As you say 05 was better.05 was better.
Sounds like you're fanboying over Bairstow mate. I'm kidding, if there was room for both players you'd take them. As I've said I think Bairstow is a superb bat, but ultimately he's dropped the Ashes and that can't be denied can it?I've never joined in with the slaughtering of Crawley and made he performed. As I said the decision hasn't worked out but its not quite as poor as the 'play proper cricket' crowd believe. His keeping got better as he went on, if thats good enough for india is another argument, but trying to get him in the side as a gun batsman is understandable. As for stating only one innings made a difference to a match, well that is such a flawed argument its not worth getting into.
This series was incredible like, thanks to England trying to forward the game. Aus countered from the ropes through England's missed punches. It was a good series but one that England let get away by both poor decision making (idiotic declaration) and poor fielding. An Aussie complaining about cheating is so funny. Your little darling smith is a dirty dirty cheat. No matter what his record says, he will always have an asterix next to his record, just like the asterix next to Liverpool's title, quite fitting really as you are the kopites of cricketHaha here we go. Technicalities saving you from utter embarrasment about ‘not winning back’ the Ashes on home turf and cheating with the new ball eh?
My stars. Guess who has the Ashes.
WE DO
Take them all to The New Arena Macca, slap em down.Haha here we go. Technicalities saving you from utter embarrasment about ‘not winning back’ the Ashes on home turf and cheating with the new ball eh?

To win down under we need to inject some serious pace into the side and rotate them to keep them fresh. Archer, Wood, Stone, Tongue and Mahmood is more than a handful pace attack down under IF they can stay fit. However these can’t put a run of tests together, which makes the longevity shown by Anderson and Broad all the more remarkable. My thoughts, as the rain saved Aus last test, I think the small rain delay today won it for England, got a bit of moisture into a flat wicket and broke the run the Aussie batsmen were on. Terrific bowling all the same.
Kev has got pretty much everything wrong in this thread but one thing he's said is true imo in that there's no way this England team wins an Ashes series down under unless it sorts a couple of obvious cracks in its side.
Great series to watch though, good on McCullum and Stokes for trying to reinvent the game, boring boring Aussies.
Carey only dropped one this test, but his keeping has been fine. If only bairstow had caught his in the first two tests and not gone walkabout at lords.some of the keeping this series has been atrocious - that Root catch in the first innings was amazing but Bairstow just watched it go past him

Which makes the ineffectiveness of broad and Anderson even more baffling. They are up there with the best when it comes to line and length. This is an interesting table:

Only Steyn, Morkel and Bumrah on that list with genuine pace, I'm not sure it's the key, it's more about being consistent on flatter, bouncier pitches with a duller Kookaburra ball. It's consistency of line and length and taking your chances that wins in Australia, they punish you in the heat if you don't catch or you go off the boil.
He's made errors for sure, I wouldn't classify it that way personally.Sounds like you're fanboying over Bairstow mate. I'm kidding, if there was room for both players you'd take them. Chris Tremlett was so good for that series. This is an interesting table:
