Do you work out mate?

First run in 2 months today. Lasted 4km until I’ve done something to my leg. The muscle behind my left knee was in agony mid run. Tried to run through it but maybe I’ve made it worse. Painful to stretch out. Hoping it’s just abit of impact as was up and down hill. Question is when should I start back running @COYBL25 just see how it is in a few days?

When you put your feet up tonight, rest it on a hot water bottle. That’ll help ease the discomfort.

See how it is in the morning, as it could just be a minor strain, that’ll heal quickly.

You probably tried to push it too hard after that lay off.

Do your next run, at super slow jog pace, until your leg muscles are happy with running again - however long that takes.

I’m trying a new programme after reading a load of stuff, about the benefits of slow running :

80% slow

20% hard

It sounds mad, but running slowly is really hard to do, as it just feels too easy !

Spot on mate. Yeh I was watching a video on Instagram the other day about someone talking about slow running. Saying one of the biggest fails by runners is running too much and too fast. I just wanted to blow off the cobwebs but now found myself with a few strongbow and feeling like a right tit.

Have you tried zone 2 running, where you go at 60 - 70% of your max heart rate? It's meant to keep you in your aerobic work area and help your base stamina.

Tried it the other day, you really do feel you're running slow, but it does seem to burn.

Apparently you're meant to do 80% of your workouts in this zone.

I tried that 30/15/3 thingy yesterday, that all the girls are doing at the moment. Was hard. Especially after leg day.
Been hungry all day.

Matt Fitzgerald’s book “80/20 running “ is a good read mate . Try run/walk on your easy days too.

It’s a real mental thing, as you’re so conditioned to compare your times, as a way of gauging fitness.

The article I read was by a champion lady marathon runner, who had a race pace of 5.30 and on her easy days, was running 8.15, so nearly a three minute a mile difference !

She was a massive advocate of easy running and reckoned, not only did it improve performance, but lessened injury and fatigue too.

I bore everyone I know with this question, but do you warm up before your run, ie a very slow jog then stretch, then run? (Note: if you are under 30 this is less important).

I'm not entirely convinced by the idea of slow running as an actual thing to do as your training, but ten minutes very slow to wake your muscles/ligaments/tendons up, then stretching, and then running at a decent lick - thats where it's at for me.

To be fair I done some stretches but I wouldn’t say I done a warm up. My run starts with a fair steep incline so I can’t take it full pelt anyway but am guessing I should start doing abit of a warm up first. I actually feel ok today so will go again tomorrow.

When you're so cronky that you gotta start your dumbell chest press with the 10's just to switch on the muscles, and THAT'S the bit when you're surrounded by the hot women and the swole bro's smirking at you. Then by the time you get to top weight the entire gym has emptied, so you genuinely consider dragging your bench into the spin room so at least all the old dears doing the over-70's spin class get to SEE WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT BRO!

Maybe I'm doing this for all the wrong reasons 😂

Been enjoying the gym the last week or so.

Managed to up the weight on chest. I can do 82kg on the machine now (can't be arsed with barbell training alone), I'm comfortably repping 30s on dumbbell press, and I can finally do some nice and deep dips with no assisted weight. I'm pleased with that considering I had to set the assist to 42kg in January.
