I may be making my first trip to the UK this December as it is now possible I may be moving over there as early as next summer. Won't be all fun and games since I will have to look at places to live, but what are some things I should see? I'm not into touristy things but I do love historic sites. How feasible is it to see Scotland and Ireland if I rent a car? Any info would be much, MUCH appreciated.

London is a good place to start with historical sites despite them also being touristy, I've always been interested in WW2 so my personal favourite is the Churchill War Rooms in Westminster. A slight de-tour on the way to East Anglia is Bletchley Park about 1.5 hours NNW of london.

When it comes to places to live, the daily commute isn't maybe as free-flowing as it might be in the U.S, you guys appear to have way more straight, wide roads (?). As a point of reference, I commute 22 miles to work, which takes around 40 mins and I fill up (£50) about 2.5 times a month. I commuted double that at one time and it just got tedious.

Been to New York City twice....cool place...Christmas time too so had the added bonus of the Christmas tree at Rockefeller....got tickets to the Letterman show and saw him interview Clint Eastwood & Meryl Streep...buildings are class...so much to do and see there...

Japan mate, fabulous experience. Great people, loads of history, spectacular scenery - can thoroughly recommend it.
Russia - Moscow is a must visit, if only for the tour of the Kremlin.
The Seychelles - stunning beaches !!!!!
Africa is a stunning continent with so much diversity in the people. Have been to Nigeria, Egypt, and lived in both Sudan and Ghana.

What's the best time of year to visit Japan?....would love to visit tokyo

WW2 sites are what I am most interested in as well. As for the commute, I'm used to having an absolutely horrid commute so anything is an improvement at this point. Straight wide roads? I wish. :(

I really want to go to Tokyo but Mrs Ij isn't keen at all.

What are the best things you guys would suggest I show her to change her mind?

So many things:

Everything works, super clean, super safe, the most hospitable and friendly hosts. Fantastic food, amazing culture and architecture, brilliant hotels, Sakura and autumn festivals, temples, art, amazing geography, Mt Fuji, volcanic springs, hot sands, - I could go on!

Tell me more about these festivals.
