Could you tell me what you liked about Barcelona? I've been twice now, 15 years apart, and I have to say I've been thoroughly underwhelmed both times. I must caveat that by saying I was a 20yo student the first time and a father of 3 the second time, and my impression of the place is that it's purely an adults city, one for art galleries and boozing. Maybe I'll like it if I ever go back with the missus for the weekend, but frankly, I was struggling to find much to like about the place. Smattering of decent architecture in the old parts, but otherwise, a hot, crowded place, rather dirty, La Rambla was a hell-hole of tat shops (much like the Tottenham Ct Rd end of Oxford St), and I couldn't wait to leave the place.

Conversely, Girona was a wonderful place which I enjoyed immensely.

I've lived in Barcelona for 3 years and been on La Rambla about three times, avoid it!!

Where did you stay on the Costa Brava? Some really nice places up there.

We were on the edge of Platya D'Aro, near Palamos. Fantastic campsite, and took lots of day trips out to Llafranc, Girona, Begur, Figueres etc. A great holiday.

Anyone ever been to Bratislava in Slovakia? Thinking about booking a long weekend there in November for my girlfriends birthday but have literally no idea about the City. If it's anything like Bosnia or Croatia i'm sure it'll be brilliant.

I've always wanted to go to the following countries/cities: Chile, Japan, Finland, Laos, Myanmar, Bhutan, Tanzania, Morroco, Fiji, Istanbul, Budapest, Hong Kong, Munich.

Countries/Cities that I've visited and LOVE are: Madagascar, Mexico (lived there for a bit as a child), Barcelona, Costa Rica, Paris, Liverpool (I'm an American so I'm allowed to say this), London (ditto), New York City, Denmark, Stockholm, Alaska (spent several summer there in college).

A different part of Eastern Europe though, Slovakia has the reputation of being the poor relation to the Czech Republic when the old Czechoslovakia split in c.1989. Could you combine it with Vienna, not far as the crow flies?

Azerbaijan is probably the best of the Central Asia states to visit, be thankful it was not Uzbekistan!

Lad I worked with in Holland (he was Scottish & company from Aberdeen) got asked to go over to Uzbekistan, he went then announced he was coming back to visit with his new wife .... she was an absolute stunner !! said he used to just pull over at the roadside wherever he fancied & there was weed growing wild there, said he was baked the whole time for free.
