Travel thread 3.0

On way to Krakow for a few days. Anyone been? Any suggestions?
Yes. Twice, lovely city. The main square is huge and beautiful, but a combination of tacky 'brit' oriented bars in one corner and very expensive tourist traps. First went in 2014 and it was not really like that, but last went 2020 and it had changed a lot. Best bars are the cellar bars imho. Not always easy to spot and quite often the music / karaoke give it away. There's a museum under the central building in the main square which is cool.

My top tip is go around the back streets of old town as the better/cheaper eateries and bars are there. The old Jewish quarter (Kazimierz) is great as well (tram or walk) with a ton of tragic history. We visited Schindlers factory and didn't have enough left in the tank to do the auschwitz tour.

The castle is great too - go up the bell tower for a top view.

Agree with all that. Great city. Found the old town good for traditional eating then around Podgorze both around Schindlers factory and Park Bednarskiego there are a lot of more modern places.

There are some quite impressive cocktail bars around the old town too

Just had a text from my mate I’m going to NYC with. He wants to stay in Harlem. Seems a bit out of the way to me
I originally booked an air bnb in Harlem, the one person I know in NY said it is a really cool area and becoming gentrified but still "quite a few crazies", especially from the Apollo northwards.

As it turned out, NY banned air bnb two days after I booked it so am now in a hotel down near the bottom of Manhatten

Yeah I was reading about the air bnb thing too. Place we were looking at was on W122 and Adam Clayton, which I think seemed pretty safe, just a bit out of the way of everything

I like the freedom of it too. You can choose to do what you want every day
True but you also need to set rough outlines for yourself and or you can lose days in your hotel to hangovers.

I always loved travelling solo and doing so led to a job opportunity abroad which changed my life. It also led to a wife which pretty much ended the solo travel as we go together now.

I just like not having to set an alarm in the morning or being able to have an afternoon siesta if I feel like it. But yeah I agree it does lead to more alcohol consumption lol

Krakow is very very good. Last full day today and definitely need to come back.
Got an Airbnb 5 mins from the main square and next to the train station which has been ideal.
Did Auschwitz/birkenau yesterday... absolutelty haunting, but an important place to visit and acknowledge what happened.
Today will be on foot and wandering around. 3 days is not nearly enough!

Not at all expensive btw. Some amazing food too.

Just got back from two weeks in Vietnam with the missus. A mental place, but in a good way lol never been so non-stop on a two week holiday before now..

We started in the south with 3 days in Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon) where the weather was averaging 33 degrees 🥵 when then flew north to spend the next 5 days in Da Nang & Hoi An - the latter probably being my favourite place during the trip overall. Then got another flight further north to the capital, Hanoi, where the temp dropped to a much cooler 14 degrees. Couple days there, then took a three hour bus to Ha Long Bay to do a two night cruise (which coincided with the Lunar New Year celebrations, which was an experience in itself!) before heading back to Hanoi for 24 hours before we started the journey back to the UK. The journey itself was around 19 hours - two 8-ish hour flights back-to-back with a short layover in Qatar.

Was absolutely knackered for the first couple of days back in the UK - but again, what a trip! It's also fairly cheap there as well - a bottle of beer at a bar/restaurant averages like 35,000 VND, which is just over a pound!

What I would honestly say is this - depending on the 'vibe' you're going for (i.e. if you're not that bothered about a full two weeks and prefer the warmer weather) I'd probably skip Hanoi entirely and spend a bit more time in Da Nang/Hoi An (nothing wrong with Hanoi specifically, but it was just a bit too mental at times for me and the weather was very up and down when we were there). I'd still deffo do Ho Chi Minh though - great weather with a bunch of stuff to do, like the war museum.
