can any Americans tell me if they are club before country or country before club? In all honesty I wouldn't even celebrate that much if England won it, then again your national captain isn't the most hated player of your bitter rival along with several other of his minions playing along side him. I will be rooting for the Everton players though and if he was fit in time I would of loved an Oviedo winner against England.

Everton before country by far. If there is a big Everton game I literally count down the days and hours. I haven't done that all that much with the national team. However if we ever start playing the kind of football we did in 2009-2010 pre-davies crash the gap would narrow considerably.

That davies crash was heartbreaking. We were flying.

Yesterday's U.S. vs. Portugal World Cup game did 18.2 million viewers on ESPN, 6.5 million viewers on Univision and 500,000 more viewers who were streaming the game. That beat NBA finals and the World Series. It was the most-watched non-football game ever on ESPN, peaking at 23 million viewers at 7:30 p.m.

MLS will have something to bring to the table when they next negociate TV fee's methinks

If we had him for the 2010 world cup 3rd place was a real possibility. He had the potential to be one of the best outfield players to ever play for us. He was the player who many people thought Freddy Adu would have become.

Its a spectator sport, there isn't that much and there will probably never be much money there at least for the next 15 years. Plus MLS is hellbent on quickly expanding which will divide the small pot up even more. Prem rights on the other hand are going to keep skyrocketing.

Agreed. Looked like he was going to be a top top player

Be amazing if the yanks won the world cup within years footy would be turned on it's head. Nob'eads at Uefa and Fifa would be booted out and the yanks would drag the game into the 21st century with EFC being their club of choice sponsored by the Whitehouse for having Tim H. et al.

U....S....A! U....S....A! U....S....A!

The US will never fully embrace football, too many reasons why that won't happen...And the euphoria atm will subside as it does anytime the WC comes around nevermind when the US does well, since Americans only get interested when they're winning...The excitement will dissipate once the NFL/MLB/NBA begin their seasons

Says the glory hunting tosspot.

I don't think it's that Americans need to be winning but that historically soccer in this country has been viewed almost like an Olympic sport (every 4 years). I watched every World Cup since '94 but hadn't been chosen by Everton until after the last World Cup. In fact, I had never heard of Everton before then. You really need a club to follow to truly follow the sport. For many Americans, international play is the gateway drug.

There isn't enough scoring or violence in the sport to make it a much bigger sport in the country...And without incessant timeouts and commercial breaks it makes it marketing nightmare in a country where branding and commercialization is a major objective
