I haven't eaten meat for 30 years due to animal welfare issues. I occasionally eat fish.
My wife has been vegetarian for more than 40 years .
At first it was difficult to find decent vegetarian meals when eating out but increasingly we are enjoying top quality food out.
Our weekly food bills are a fraction of my 95 year old mum's who is a carnivore.
Of course, each to their own but a delicious, healthy , balanced diet can be achieved on a budget .

What got you there? to the switch? There's an old saying, "if slaughter houses had glass walls, everyone would be a vegetarian", I'm not mad keen on cruelty (besides self inflicted Everton) and MRM (mechanically recovered meat) is an abomination. Did veggie help with weight or blood pressure or something similar?

It got to a point where I would just be thinking about struggling and dying animals every time I bit into meat. I always loved animals and there was no way I could ignore the truth of where the food came from anymore. So I just woke up one day and stopped.

I put on weight after going vegetarian, weight I would only lose about 2 years ago. It's not a weight-loss diet by any stretch and I would advise anyone doing it for that particular reason to try something else! Plenty of fattening, non-meat foods and I ate all of them, in high quantities

Being veggie is like any type of "diet". So much better if you cook fresh products rather than processed foods

I just don't have the strength to give up Bacon, Cumberland Sausage or a good steak now and again.

I will say I have got a lot better at not having meat in some meals, my partner has a few vegan friends and more and more people are going vegetarian so in the last couple of years I have cooked some good vegetarian/vegan stuff for them. Even a bit of vegan baking.

I remember me and a mate watched this video on YouTube about meat production and it was damning, in terms of environment, etc. After the video finished there was a bit of silence and then we turned to each other and in perfect unison said "But Bacon!".

Might look at doing a meat free week, now and again to lower the guilt :)

Here in Germany Vegans/vegetarians really had very little choice, in restaurants, probably up until about 2/3 years ago. Even the top notch steak restaurant has a couple of vegan options now.

Would you need to take iron tablets, or does certain vegetarian food have iron in it !!
Lots of foods have iron, but meat is a much better source, and is more readily absorbed by the body.
If you eat a well balanced vegie diet, you should be ok, but it won't do any harm to have an iron tablet (washed down with orange juice, definitely not tea), more so if you are a woman as they lose a fair bit of iron during their period

As a diabetic - I eat loads of fish, plus white meat - the one meat which I saw being made on TV & it put me off it for life & I did love it - Corned beef .... all the wastage of the cow is in it - it was disgusting to see it made full of crap of the Cow ....

Again though vegetarians vegetable crops on a big scale Temick pellets are dropped into the soil to control in a translocating method to stop pest & diseases - hence the Bee & insect population has declined any pollinator is absorbing the lethal chemicals as the chemical is still active in the vegetable inside the plant cells to kill the pest ....... when I used that stuff in the 1970s under glass I used to wear a space suit to trigger the pellets into each pot it was a lethal carcinogenic......
