World Cup 2022

If England are going to this World Cup genuinely believing they are in with a shot at winning it they need to start with three group wins.

Wales and USA are solid sides, nothing more. Iran are Russia's mates and need smashing, 4-0 as a minimum.

Iran and Saudi Arabia seemingly going to start attacking one another

Iran in Group B and Saudi in Group C, so chances of them playing one another are pretty slim because even if both teams make it out of the group it's unlikely they'll be in the same knock out bracket

It's been 20 years since a world cup winner won all their group games, so this has never been a pre-requisite.

Did you completely miss the point I was making or are you just being difficult?

Two ordinary teams and a substandard one. No, beating them is not a pre-requisite, however labouring away for a win and two draws is not what a team with aspirations of glory should be doing.

Neither. Three wins is never essential for anyone, and it doesn't take in the scenario of the final game, which can sometimes be played out for a draw as a team only needs this to win the group- or is happy with 2nd (just like England's group in 2018, funny enough).

I don't know about them but I think i'm missing the point you're making. If England want to win the tournament they need to get out of the group first. Whether they do that with 5 points or 9 points isn't really relevant. Teams always talk in these tournaments about peaking at the right time, it's more important to get better as you progress than it is to come out firing from the get go.

Italy in 82 is a great example

Looked awful in the first group stage and then came alive against Argentina and Brazil, and then rode that momentum all the way to the trophy
