Your stance on Martinez AND what would change it?

I don't think you'll see many football managers admitting they'd got things wrong mate.

Fergie never did, Mourinho never does, Wenger, Pep, Ancelotti... I could go on...

You don't make it to the top with self doubt, especially not by broadcasting your mistakes to the world, as much as fans may wish for them to do so at times...

Think you'll find over the passage of time that managers do. Fergie did, many times. Perhaps success enhances the ego, but Martinez' success at Everton is limited by any sfretch of the imagination

I never once saw Fergie admit he was wrong during a season etc. If he did, it was always way after what he had got wrong.

I welcomed his appointment as he was the best available candidate at the time, but always had a nagging fear that he might turn us into an upgraded version of Wigan. I was hoping that he would build on the solid foundations bequeathed to him and take the next steps forward. That appeared to be the case during his first season so was I happy that this fear seemed to be unfounded.

Then in the summer of 2014 he proceeded to dismantle everything that had been built and start from scratch again, discarding everything that had gone before mostly by doing nothing to keep the foundations secure. The result has been the calamity of the last 18 months and the realisation of my aforementioned fear. Gone is the famous team spirit which was once a hallmark of our side. Gone is Fortress Goodison where even the bottom clubs can now win. Gone is the fear the opposition used to have when playing us which has been replaced with an attitude that we are a soft touch and if you get at us you can turn us over. Watching games now has become an exercise in guessing at what point we will concede the next goal as we languish in the bottom half of the table.

At 18 months in charge it was far too early to consider a change, as a manager certainly needs more time than that to turn things around. Additionally it does not reflect well on the club to be chopping and changing managers at the drop of a hat. However 3 years into a job is an ample and appropriate amount of time for there to be substantive evidence of how things are going to go in the future. At this point in time all signs point in one direction - downwards. For this reason he has to be shown the door at the end of the season if and when things have not drastically improved.

At this point he would have to prove he can defend and that he doesn't have favourites that will never get dropped (eg Howard). It's got to the stage where he just annoys me now.

I did in post match interviews.

Fair enough then. Personally, I never saw the man with the biggest ego in football ever accept blame for him or his players. He might admit they weren't at the races, but he would never slate their defending publicly. And more often than not, if they lost, he'd blame the refs, and he did it a lot more than Martinez ever has...

I think we had really looked like we had turned a corner with the defending at the turn of the year. We kept Spurs to 1 (a very good goal from a very good side) and City to 1 (they did us on the counter - we've done plenty of sides 'good at defending' on the counter this year as well). We then kept the first clean sheet any team has kept against City in over a year.

That bad five minutes at Chelsea cost us those two goals, and we then didn't get a clear decision go in our favour that would have given us a big win.

Swansea, the 1st half was shocking, all round. Worst we've played this season.

City, a freak game in a sense. We went into that game with City (at home) needing to score two goals to go through. We then made sure that they had to score three. We conceded shortly after from a deflected pot shot - something we conceded plenty of under the last regime, and was as much down to a poor attempted block from Baines as it was anything else. Martinez does not tell Baines to leave a leg hanging out like that, does he?

We then, after 50 minutes of solid defending with a bit of luck with the efforts hitting the post (like plenty of teams have had against us this season when we've hit the woodwork), concede a goal that, plain and simple, should not have stood. After that, our heads drop for five minutes and City take advantage. The heads dropping is the worrying part - like the mad five minutes at Chelsea. Again, you're talking about Chelsea and City away here. Not exactly relegation fodder...

Agree on Howard. Madness he has not been dropped.

If they have not improved by season's end, then yes, time to re-assess. Now is not the time though, which is my argument against people wanting him out now.

Okay mate, decent thread idea I think.

Trying to stay away from discussion re. Martinez, i think you all know my views...

I'm behind him.

I don't agree with all of his decisions (Howard etc., certain tactics), but I also see the logic in a lot of the decisions as well (e.g. bringing on Kone the other night in an attempt to help Rom out).

I think that, taking into our account of goals scored in the last 18 months (127 from 80 games in all comps) as well as goals conceded (109 in 80), it is obvious that, fundamentally, he needs to change the defensive structure somehow.

I think that he has shown signs of that since the turn of the year.

I cite:

- Spurs at home - a solid defensive display, that at first negated our attacking. We mixed it up in the second half and in the end were unlucky not to get a winner. Fair result.

- City at home (lg.cup) - great display all-round. No complaints.

- Dag & Red: irrelevant, really.

- City away (lg): Good defensive showing. Got away with the penalty call but equaled up for the one against Stoke that cost us the point at least. Only team to keep a clean sheet vs City since Jan.15.

- Chelsea: Good 1st half, great start to the second. Had a bad five minutes and conceded twice, which is worrying, but away from home against the champions also should be taken into account. Re-grouped, scored and attempted to kill the game. Would have won it if the officials had done their job.

- Swansea: Really bad first half, worst we've been all season. Came out renewed in the second half, but couldn't get the goals. Besic going off injured hurt us.

- City: Went with a game plan and executed it well for 70 minutes. Another very bad piece of officiating and then the inevitable collapse came/City had the quality to take advantage. Should not be used against RM. Best side in the country on paper and they showed it.

So, I believe in those five matches that counted so far this month, we've shown signs of improving in defence. Little signs, but signs none-the-less. The trick is quite clearly being able to combine a solid defence with an attacking display we know we are capable of.

For example, we have done this on a few occasions and have waltzed to victories looking unplayable at times.

- Sotton away, Chelsea at home, Boro away in the quarter final, to an extent Villa and Sunderland.

I believe that the attacking displays (40 goals scored already in PL, compared to 48 total last season in PL) show definite improvement. Our defence still has a lot of catching up to do. We have conceded 45 in total in all comps this term, and scored 53.

For all the complaints about not winning games, we have also only lost 6 in total in all comps this term. We have won 11. Not good enough, no, but then again the results have not always reflected the performances, due to a combination of the points I have listed above.

In conclusion, I believe Martinez is currently the right man for the job. This is based on the above, what we have seen he can do in his first season in charge, and that it is the middle of the season. We are also playing the best football I have ever seen Everton play, and I believe it is some of the most exciting attacking football currently being played in the supposed best league in the world.

I am not steadfast in my support. I will criticise when I believe he/the team deserves it - his refusal to not play Joel in the league being a prime example. Coming into this season I expected a top 6/7 finish. I would have been happy with a cup and top 10. Being realistic, I still think both are achievable.

My opinion will change if we start to lose games consecutively in the league heading into the key part of the season. We have 45 points available. I'd like to think if it clicks we can pick up around 30 and get well over 50 points. If we do not reach this mark, and we have not won the cup, then summer would be the time to re-assess and see where we are at, and whether it would be better to go for a manager who has the know-how and style to take this team where it can get to, even if some of the players do leave. However, at this point in the season, I do not believe any of those managers are available/would leave their current job to take over us.

At the end of the day, we all want Everton to achieve. And i'm not looking for any debate on Martinez, as that is for the other thread. The above is my opinion.

EDIT: I also want to add, that I believe our results will improve a lot when McCarthy returns to full fitness, with Besic ideally able to slot in as well.
good post this. my personal opinion is that if a few results had gone our way (eg Bournemouth and Chelsea ) we would be less critical. however for the past 2 seasons I go to goodison with a sense that we need to score at least 2 to get something out of a game. our away displays are fairly good so we need to as a team and as supporters make goodison an intimidating place again and our home form must improve quickly.

agree 100% there pal

Nothing will change. Fans will/will not want Martinez out. The Board will not act to remove Martinez unless new owners on board demanding change or the league position is threatened so much that relegation is on the cards. Martinez knows that and thats why he refuses to change his game plan.
