Martinez did it the first season with a team that had already established itself as a regular european qualifying team under David. It all went down hill rapidly after that fabled first season

Why shouldn't we demand it? We did of the previous two managers. £6m p.a.? He has to justify that. That's his objective. He stated it too. If he doesn't get it he's failed for the season.

No free passes.

Erm, you most certainly did not demand it of the last manager!

It was this fella.

Massive head too!

Won't take much improvement for top 7. After all we have almost got half of our total home wins from last season already after 7 games.
I'd be targeting 60 points as a fair season, whether that gets us 5th or 8th is irrelevant.

60 points will get you 7th this year and no higher I recon due to the strength of City, United, Chelsea, Spurs, Arsenal and Liverpool... less points will be taken of them than in recent years imo..

Need a scenario were 3/4 of them six run away with it and the other 3/4 struggle for 60 odd points to get you 5th..

I'd be made up with 7th myself whether that was on 55 , 60 or 65 points, I think it would be a real sign of a step in the right direction and give us a platform to challenge the top 6 next year..

You yourself have acknowledged that to get higher than 7th will be very hard when you posted this, just a few weeks ago, now you're saying he'll of failed if he doesn't break into that group? All whilst telling anyone who'll listen he hadn't been backed appropriately in the market? Something soesnt add up here.
The four CL spots WILL come from those teams I highlighted. Where in that post did I rule out Everton getting into Europe though?

Dear me.

Didn't I? In one way, shape or form (winning a cup or coming top 6 - realistically a Euro spot from that) I always looked for that outcome. I just didn't (as with Koeman) demand his head if he didn't reach it.

...much will depend on the January transfer window but seeing is believing and I'm not seeing a top 7 team. Saying that, we are work in progress and improvement will be gradual.

That team that he inherited was creaking really badly as well though with a fair amount of ageing players and no legitimate options up front.

The game has changed so much since then in fairness. We last finished 5th under Moyes in 08/09.

In some ways yes, in other ways no. There is more money for everyone now, we are arguably on a level playing field with most of the league outside of 5 or 6 clubs. Back in Moyes' era we were one of the lowest spenders in the league, the top 4 were largely imperious, and yet we still saw off the likes of Spurs Villa Newcastle sides with far more resources than us to finish top 6 (even 4th once). I think it was a disgrace that these achievements were derided at the time or patronised now (not by you) and European qualification is still the benchmark I hold any good Everton manager to.

7th is like a default setting for were Everton will finish,i do think 6th or 7th though, said that before seasons ko,but the way we have started made me think we could do a tiny touch better, but on the other hand when we have our bad run,6th/7th i will be thinking is normal

@davek is right. European football has to be the minimum target each season for any Everton manager, even more so with Moshiri's resources now. If Koeman doesn't get it he won't be fired but you would have to call his first season a failure unless it was accompanied by a trophy. I happen to think he will however comfortably achieve it.
